My boss has an autistic son. Michael Weiner can go pound sand.

I had one child with serious issues and I used to feel so bad for him in class (9th grade). He didn’t fit in, the other kids were really afraid of him. I don’t think he got much out of things. He was of average intelligence, but his behavior made it very difficult for him to learn much in a regular classroom setting. He could sometimes be funny (in a fun way) but most of the time, I am sure he felt isolated. I tried to help him fit in, but really, my job was to teach an entire class physical science. BTW there was no aide in that classroom. It was me with about 24 or 25 students (and I think that class had about 7 or 8 kids with modifications—everything from non English speaking to LD).

You know, you keep spouting that but it’s simply not true. I had many students whose parents did zero, and yet many of those kids could read and graduated with a pretty good basic education. I think home schooling is great, but for many kids it’s never ever going to happen. I guess you would be satisfied with those kids not getting an education. Which tells me all I need to know about you.

That’s your opinion. I never saw anything like this. Never.

I guess you would be satisfied with those kids not getting an education.

I can NOT defend a strawman argument of your creation. Please provide a link that would even remotely suggest that I would not want any child to have an education.

As a "professional" teacher I **know** you would never use strawman arguments against the students in your classes. As a "professional" teacher you would know that children are often too immature and unsophisticated to recognize a strawman. No, no,...A "professional" teacher would never do that.

A review of my posts will prove to other opened minded Freepers that I care deeply about our nation's children and want them to have an effective, thorough, and Judeo Christian based education that upholds our nation's founding principles. This is why I am working so hard here in my community in after school tutoring at our church, scouting, for privatizing universal K-12 education, and for the complete shut down of the government K-12 system.

Which tells me all I need to know about you.

Well,...The above strawman stands for all to see here on Free Republic. I will let them judge for themselves, not only you, but how it reflects on "professional" teaching.

You have given people on FR ample posts to see what you’re about.
I’m not going to argue with you, it’s a waste of everyone’s time. You have a hard and fast opinion on public schools.

The only thing I really know about you, from FR is that you dearly love to argue with anyone who mentions public schooling.

“That’s your opinion. I never saw anything like this. Never.”

I see. My views become personal opinion because YOU claim never to have seen government school abuse of special needs children. Perhaps you need to get around a little more and read more extensively.

Unfortunately for government school apologists, the facts are out in the open. I alluded to them in the post. If you had been paying attention you might have looked before you posted, but since you couldn’t manage that, here is a link to one of many stories about the GAO Report that embarrassed Duncan into issuing a statement and a letter. The first comment below the article provides a very accurate account of the attitude of the education establishment towards the problem.

Well, they mention “widespread abuse” but then they say only 5 states keep records. Do you have more information?
Again. I never saw anything like this. What did YOU see? Or, are you simply relying on CNN and a GAO report?

You might start with reading the report, which can be found on line. Second, you can bet your bottom dollar that just about ANY problem in its operations that the government is forced to acknowledge is far worse than it is acknowledged to be. This one was bad, otherwiswe Duncan would have not felt constrained to make a show of “caring”.

Third, it isn’t necessary for states to have record keeping requirements to find the problem. Most school systems and state lie all of the time regarding things that are supposed to be reported - violence against student and teachers, eligibility for free and reduced cost lunch programs, test scores, etc. The widespread abuse that was found was found through investigation.

I talk to teachers and administrators often. Most of them are at their wits end about just about every facet of government school operations today. The conditions for competent teachers are atrocious, for example.

The problems for “special needs” children aren’t just matters labeled as abuse. Many of the standard operating procedures are abusive. One of our local districts shackles special needs children on buses. This, of course, is how we move prisoners from prison to the courthouse and back.

Much of what you posted again, is your opinion. And that’s fine, you are welcome to it. Again. I stated simply that I had never seen anything like what is stated in the article. I’m done discussing this with you.

You have an ideosyncratic understanding of “opinion”. If you mean “opinion” supported by systematic data, yes, it is that sort of opinion. This would contrast with the sort of opinion based on “well, I’ve never seen that before”. Adios.
