He re-acted to a situation that he must have believed he could handle.
You obviously are a more careful individual.
It’s been time for Vigilance.
He must never drive on this nation’s highways.
Or read comments in context;)
“That does nothing at all to help his family in any tangible way. That’s what one better think about when they’re in that kind of potential situation.”
Sometimes things are just the right thing to do, without regard for the consequences. He died a man. Lots of folks do not.
You obviously are a more careful individual.
I'm less careful nowadays, than I was before. There was a time when I had to consider these things more carefully, and rightfully so. But, now, things are different, kids are on their own, no one is directly depending on me and I can be a bit more reckless... and I probably would be (and have been, too), under the present circumstances.
But, one cannot afford that more reckless behavior when they are talking about their own wife's future and their own kids future hanging in the balance.
“In both situations (military or civilian), you do the necessary thing to come home when you’re finished, because your family is the first priority.”
Nope. In the military, the mission comes first. Otherwise NO ONE would be there in the first place!
If only there were more Bernie Goetzes in this world.

I would be more approving of that kind of attitude, when it concerns a wife and kids left fatherless and husbandless -- if -- society, in general, would pick up the tab for taking care of that wife and kids, monitarily, for a man doing that sort of thing and getting killed in the process.
They would still be at a disadvantage, as money can't cure all things, but at least they wouldn't be left in the lurch, if society would make sure they would always pick up the tab on that sort of thing.
If society doesn't deem itself responsible enough to do that for the wife and fatherless kids -- then the father must be more responsible, himself -- towards his wife and kids.
The mission gets done and the people come home... that’s what the goal is...
He must never drive on this nations highways.
I drive in a highly alert state, which is more than I can say for many I've seen driving... LOL ...
And I also practice defensive driving and don't count on the other person for saving my skin... doncha know... :-)
The key here is taking precautions, driving defensively, knowing what are the limitations (for the machinery and the circumstances and the surroundings) and reacting accordingly and thereby reducing your risks to a bare minimum. And you can do that, if you work at it. And that's precisely what people need to do when they do go out and drive.
“if society would make sure they would always pick up the tab on that sort of thing.

OH YES! Of course! It’s “society” that better pony up! You fit in well with the new socialism of the day!
OH YES! Of course! Its society that better pony up! You fit in well with the new socialism of the day!
I'm not saying that they should. I'm saying that the only circumstances that I would consider it okay for a guy to jeopardize his own family's future, recklessly (like some advocate here) -- would be if society would pick it up.
But, what I think -- is that they guy should consider his own family's future -- himself -- and never jeopardize that, and always consider that he is the one responsible for his family and not society.
Therefore, the guy should not jump in there and recklessly put his life in danger -- since society is not the one responsible for his family. It's him who is responsible for his family.

Rough area.

The comments at the end of the article are very interesting. All of them could have been written by good, conservative FReepers.
Maybe some are finally getting the message.
So, he’d have been better off sacrificing the life of his young friend just to protect his own butt?
There are no guarantees when you intervene in a situation like that.
What’s wrong with you?
You are so right.
So, hed have been better off sacrificing the life of his young friend just to protect his own butt?
He would have been better off protecting the lives of his own family -- his wife-to-be and his two sons, instead of recklessly and irresponsibly abandoning them and handing them over to the state welfare machinery.
His own family comes first in all his responsibilities. He has the prime responsibility to take care of his own family -- and it's not the responsibility of society, the state and welfare agencies to take care of his family since he was reckless and irresponsible in his duties to them, and has totally failed his own family.
There are no guarantees when you intervene in a situation like that.
There are no guarantees when I go out and drive, either, but I am not reckless and irresponsible in driving. I don't speed, don't pull out in front of oncoming traffic, look out for the other guy, drive defensively and reduce my risks by driving at a very heightened state of alertness. I stay out of trouble, and don't jump into trouble, in order to reduce my risks.
This guy was not being responsible to his own family and was reckless and totally irresponsible to them, leaving the wife-to-be without a husband and two kids without a father and basically leaving all of them to be the responsibility of society (which they are not), instead of tending to his own responsibilities as the first order of business.
Coward.
