So an 8 earthquake is 64 times stronger than a 6 point earthquake.

The energy release increase is exponential as well; so a magniture 8 earthquake releases over 1,000 times more energy than a magnitude 6 earthquake.

He could care less, just wait and see, all he and his machine care for is power and political positioning, the genetically inferiors are nothing but tools to him.

It would be interesting indeed if he actually does try to be a president and a leader and decides to calm fears.

CNN reporting the tsunami hitting Robinson Crusoe “huge wave” ...seems odd we haven’t heard about any others.

In Spanish. Giving it the Spanish pronunciation while speaking in English, though, is affectation and we know that Obama has plenty of that.

I see your point, but I think Chileans appreciate it when foreigners make the effort. I know it ticks me off to hear folks in Arabian countries refer to the U.S. as "Ameriqi".

Five minutes ago when I first looked at this thread I saw this:

I am in the Eastern Time Zone but Jim doesn’t have the page adjust the times to local times until the page finishes loading. If I had waited I would have seen my EST appear.

Sorry.

California under tsunami advisory

(snip)

A tsunami advisory was issued for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal area from Kodiak to Attu islands.

An advisory means there may be strong currents, but that widespread inundation is not expected to occur.

Jordan Scott, a spokesman for the California Office of Emergency Management, said the state was monitoring the situation and that it’s up to local communities to prepare.

If a tsunami hits the West Coast, the first waves would reach La Jolla near San Diego, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

Fox is virtually ignoring this. They are now talking about how to install lighting from the Home Depot guy. :(

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says the earthquake in Chile has generated a tsunami that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in Hawaii. The first waves are expected to reach Hawaii at 11:19 a.m. Hawaii time (4:19 p.m. EST).

The center’s director is calling for “urgent action to protect lives and property” in Hawaii. He says he doesn’t know how big the waves will be, but he expects them to be the largest to hit Hawaii since 1964.

Yikes! That's a little too close for comfort!

Getting rid of the Richter scale must be a French thing or something.

The Richter scale hasn't actually been used for many decades, the term simply got so popularized the media never caught on. The Richter scale, to be technically precise, is only for use in Southern California on a specific type of seismograph.

However all the various scales are exponentional and roughly correspond to the original Richter scale; the most common scale used for large earthquakes is the Moment Magnitude scale.

To explain some of the confusion, each step on the scale represents 10 times more ground shaking; however, each step on the scale represents abou 32 times more energy release, which most closely corresponds to actual damage.

Any geologists out there? Just curious how this plays into the Yellowstone swarms. Any connection with the three massive earthquakes in a month? Haiti, Japan and now Chile?
