Schools, nursing homes and grocery stores are not affected by the economy and are easy targets that are usually fully occupied and defenseless.

While I think AQ is still attempting to use aviation as a weapon...I do believe you are correct with regards to schools being at the top of their list.

“...once a suicide bomber comes to this country and gets exposed to our society, they would become less likely to be willing to commit suicide.”

.
That’s a rather naive conclusion when you consider that we have had American-born jihadists blowing themselves up in Somalia? You can easily expect home-grown terrorists to do the dirty work.

As you read this, a terrorist is born in one of our hospitals, all medical expenses paid for by an American health insurance company.

The whole point of an attack on schools would be to spread terror. A multifaceted attack would do just that. Phase one would be to enter the schools. Securing the doors so that students would not easily escape. Load a fake police car and ambulance with explosives, arrive with first responders and detonate them. Attack police and first responders as they show up forcing a perimeter to be setup too far away for SWAT and SRTs to make an assault. Slowly and methodically kill everyone inside before burning the building down.

Nothing could be more terrifying. With the impotent putz we have in the Whitehouse, the thought of an attack within our bordes scares me to no end.

I have long though the Mall of America in Minneapolis is one big fat terrorist target and now that Somali Muslims from Minneapolis have been found to be undergoing terrorist training in Somalia only reinforces that belief.

Dunno about terror but I have felt depression, revulsion and disappointment when I walk from one end of a mall to the other and see absolutely nothing worth purchasing.

I am one of those “elderly power walkers” that someone here snidely noted. In the local mall where I log a lot of miles, there aren’t that many people shopping, yet another new ladies’ shoe store opened. A couple of the stores are run by moslems and seeing women wearing hijab is quite common. Two years ago there was a shooting in the mall, but that involved Haitian gangs, not moslems.

If I wanted to do a long term hostage situation you can’t beat a Super Wal-Mart. Plenty of food, plenty of ammo and guns in the sporting goods section and plenty of other supplies plus the drugs in the Pharmancy if you wanted to drug the hostages so they won’t be as likely to escape. Weld the emergency doors shut. Make propane canisters into bombs at the entryways and sit back and hope it goes on for weeks of national media coverage.

During the Christmas shopping season who knows the effect on the economy if people was afraid of going to Wal-Mart.

Our local mall just filed for bankruptcy but we’re seeing the emergence of the open mall; up-scale stores laid out in a town square sort of setting. The one nearest to my house is always packed. It’s a pleasure to shop there because you
can park right in front of the store you want or in the middle of the parking lot and hit them all.

We have two malls in town but the one that seems to be doing better is the one that started out as a strip mall built in the late 50s or early 60s.

Personally I prefer it because its close to the highway and all the stores have street access and I don’t have to walk all the way through the place to get anywhere. Its grown considerably in recent years with the addition of a Target store and Kohls.

Haven’t been to an enclosed mall in probably three years. That is certainly one of the reasons.

FReepers have been writing about these kinds of attacks since 9-11. If it were at all feasible, the terrorists would have done it already.

They have! These incidents previously noted on FR Threat Matrix threads:

2007 Utah mall shootiing - Bosnian Muslim murderer was jihadi

Julia Gorin digs through the FBI report on the Salt Lake City Valentine's day massacre of 2007. Here is previous extensive coverage of the jihad in Salt Lake here. One detail it mentions, which we didn’t hear about before, is that Talovic was wearing a miniature Koran necklace while he shot the people at the mall. This is new information, which we’re finding out only because someone made a Freedom of Information Act request.

FBI investigating Spokane/Northtown Mall incident as possible terrorism

A February incident in which noxious fumes were released in the region’s largest shopping mall is being investigated by the FBI as a possible incident of domestic terrorism. The fumes prompted the evacuation of NorthTown Mall in February, and at least 36 people sought medical care.

Islamic terrorism strikes Finland

The gunman was identified as 43-year-old Ibrahim Shkupolli, an immigrant who had been living for several years in Finland, police superintendent Jukka Kaski said, adding that the weapon used was an unlicensed handgun.

Three Budapest shopping malls evacuated after bomb threats

Three shopping malls were evacuated in the Hungarian capital Thursday after bomb threats, officials said.

Explosives experts searched the three large shopping malls and hundreds of people were evacuated, an Interior Ministry spokeswoman said.

The reason they haven’t been hit is because of the public rage that would follow. It would not help the Islamists to have everyday average Americans experience them as a death cult. They hit financial towers and it’s different. They get the Left on their side when they hit a military base or a financial tower. Hitting a school or a mall and even the Left has to wake up to what’s real. They do not want that. They count on the Democrats and the media to assist them as they do.

Thanks, MD. This is one of my greatest fears. That, and schools, hospitals, sporting arenas, airport terminals, subways, tourist attractions, etc. Those venues would strike Americans of all stripes, not just the airline flyers (a rather selective group).

And strikes there would devastate our already shaky economy.

Right...leftists have children in the schools and leftists shop at the malls. It would effect them directly.

There is really no easier place to attack. At our local mall you could drive a tractor tailer right to the center of the building if you wanted too.

A car can do a lot of damage, too.

On a serious note, a mall attack was one of the scenarios outlined in Jeff Head's book.
