Two things amaze me about conservatives:

1) They consistently fail to realize that **conservatives** must stop “Waiting for Godot”. If were are going to save this nation we **must** get our nation's children into tuition-free PRIVATE conservative schools! We must do this NOW! We must do this ourselves! All those quotes from Lenin, Hitler, and Mao about educating the next generation are TRUE!!

2) I am amazed at how seriously clueless so many conservatives are about government schooling. We see comments on Free Republic daily from conservatives who foolishly believe that government schools would be “fixed” if only:

* The NEA were abolished
* The Department of Education were abolish
* Local control were re-instituted
* More parents volunteered in the PTA
* If conservatives controlled the school boards
* If evolution were eliminated
* We had the Pledge and prayer
* If government schools were only like they were in the early 1960s ( 50s) (40s) etc.

ad nauseam!

Government schools always have been and always will be socialism for parents who want something for FREE! Socialism can not be fixed!

ALL government schools from the very beginning in the mid-1800s are an object lesson for all children in socialism. All children learn ( just by attending) that the government can take money from their neighbor to pay for a service their parents want for free. Well?...If education can by taken from your neighbor's wallet, why not FDR's New Deal, retirement, disability, prescriptions, health care, free art and public radio, transportation, food, clothing, housing, and anything else the voting mob wants for free?

Government schools didn't make FDR's New Deal or Obamacare possible. Government schools made them INEVITABLE!!!!

The main reason behind this idea is to raise teacher salaries. In fact there is no evidence to support the idea that longer school days and longer school years are helpful for most students.

Our grandkids are on this year round treadmill.

We are afraid that by the time they get out of highschool, they will burnt out.

Their times off are minimal, and during that time the coaches, dance instructors and tutors keep right on with their schedules and some try to increase their schedult.

Our GKs biggest complaint is they never get to come spend a few days or a week with the grandparents or take relaxed day trips. As noted above, the short time periods, they are off are pre scheduled with the non class room activities, which don’t take a break.

We hear the same complaint from Granparents up and down the West Coast where their GKs have year round school.

If they cut the crap out of school, and focused on core studies, 6 hours a day is more than enough time.

more time under government supervision= less time with parents

it’s the obama way of showing his faith in and love for the American people, by taking their children and raising them in a socialist collective. Not his kids of course- yours

There has been discussion of high school students starting a bit later, instead of earlier than the rest of the younger kids. They can't even get that to work because these older kids either have sports events after school,they go home and take care of their younger siblings, or may even work a pt job. You know, other things outside of Obamas agenda.

Kids are tired, and society is getting a bit burned out. Push them that hard, and I think productivity will go down. He needs to educate himself on the details. countries like Spain who have long school days - BUT, they stop school in the middle of their day for a very long break, so they can enjoy lunch and have time with their families. That's right - family. Spain is encouraging time with family - not less time with family.

Now he wants these kids to do hundreds of hours of service and add hundreds of hours of school.

It will never fly - but, I find it quite irritating that he thinks that citizens do not have a life outside of his agenda, and if they do - to he would like to try and remove it.

Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe.

Some day, these nitwits need to ask themselves why, since its existence, America has been the source of far more invention and innovation than any other part of the world. It still is, and maybe that has something to do with freedom, and less regimented education, and maybe most of all that free time during summer kids have always had to play and experiment and just be free to let their imaginations wander.

I believe, that for families and students who take education seriously, those summer months off, and away from formal education, are one of the secrets to our historic lead in invention and innovation.

More school won't solve the problems of those who do not take education seriously, but it will likely stifle the creativity of those who do.

It is not up to the President to decide such things. And longer school terms means higher costs, which must be borne by the taxpayer, mostly in the form of higher property taxes. Almost all of the states are in financial extremis and it will get worse next year without another stimulus package.

In fact, kids spend to much time in school for what they have to learn. It is a fact that 4 hour days are more conducive to learning than 7 or 8 hour days. Bozo simply wants more time to brainwash the kids. He doesn’t think we will catch him at it, although we have twice caught him, once on his propaganda speech to the schools, which changed after the fact, and once with the brainwashing songs that were videoed.

Instead of being served 2 government food program meals a day, they will increase that to 3. And they will build more indoctrination centers. (formerly known as schools.)

Teacher salaries will double of course.

LOL

All those little know-it-alls that thought Zero was a hero say.... “FUBO” LOL

Next will be a hefty fine for not going to school. If that doesn’t work, then there are the camps they can go to to be re-programmed.

Actually, I’ve been proposing this for years, for precisely the reason that you say it won’t happen. My proposal is aimed at doing an end around on the teachers’ unions. It would involve a two tier level teaching system, a professional, non-union level that works year around and a union staff that continues to work the union schedule.

The professional level would be responsible for a team of union level teachers and their performance. The summer classes would be both remedial and advanced, as well as sports and arts. Summer classes could also be open to students from other school districts for a fee, so that if one school had a great orchestra program, or sports coach, that was a draw, the school district could make money and fill summer classes with out of district students.

Never happen...one word...unions.

It's already happening.

The unions WANT more schools and longer school hours because more schooling = more teachers = more money for the unions = more gold chains around the union thugs' necks = more laundered Democrat campaign cash. Ubama doesn't make a statement like this unless the union tells him to, believe me.

The current public school system needs to be razed and the education of children left up to parents to work out.

What is wrong with parents actually taking care of their own kids’ needs?
