This is what some of us want to hear. But what about that "Tatar Yoke" and the shame and hatred of being under Mongol rule for generations?

It made sense to think that a Soviet Union, ruling over half of Europe, would make use of Muslims to cause trouble for the West in the Middle East. A Russia that's in danger of not being masters in its own house will have a different take on things.

Assume that this is true, though. There are enough militant Russian nationalists to overthrow the government (with civil war as a possibility) or subvert it from within that too close an identification of the government with Muslims would be avoided.

Russia wants control of and access to the Middle Eastern oil. Islam dominates to the ME, so they befriend Muslim terrorist groups/nations that seek to overthrow the existing regimes or turn their own into pro-Russian proxies (Iran, Libya, Syria, Saddam’s Iraq...). It’s all about energy.
