The problem I have with the statement that aspirin killed him is that he presented to 2 emergency rooms, awake, verbally communicative, apparently oriented, and with a blood pressure which allowed him to perform those aforementined functions. Someone dies of metabolic acidosis when aspirin toxicity is the cause. So if someone becomes obtunded and has decerease in cardiac output due to the acidosis you put him on a ventilator, begin to correct the acidosis, even if you have to use IV bicarbonate is rather large doses. You use supportive treatment, if cardiac output is diminsihed, even if you have to put a percutaneous pump. This man was 51, apparently otherwise healthy, and if seems he died very, very quickly, given the information we are dealing with here.

According to [Police Chief] Evans, police found an open aspirin bottle and several pills which they could not identify in Kelly’s SUV.
Evans said police also found an “unopened box of rat poison” at the scene. She added that there was also “a sleeping bag, there were photos of three young girls and miscellaneous other items including food, trash and clothing.”
When Kelly was asked at the hospital whether he overdosed on Tylenol or aspirin, Kelly said “no, I only took Tylenol for pain. I had recent surgery on my private parts.”
The police have concluded the death “was an apparent suicide” and that no one else was involved. “There is no evidence whatsoever of involvement by other persons,” said Evans.

Posted by a Freeper on another thread (but that statement was not in the linked article...), but even if true (which I do not know), it still begs the question. If they could not treat him adequately, why wait 6 hrs to transfer him.

I know nothing about Oak Forest Hospital. But if it is a Medicare Accredited Hospital there are certain standards with which they must comply in order to get paid by medicare. If they are a hospital without emergency care offered then medicare will not approve medicare approved visits for emergency care and will force any hospital to eat those costs incurred by ANY visit. So if they are not medicare approved I find it unusual they would have a sign out saying EMERGENCY ROOM. Moreover if they have no emergency service available where would the man ‘check in’, logistically handling anyone presentings as an emergency. Therefore I must conclude, there was an ER, and therefore, it should have conformed to ‘Standard of Care’ or run the risk of the hospital, and/or its owners assuming a huge liability. If the patient was ‘enticed’ to come to that hospital which could not offer appropriate care they could be entirely shut down with ownership liable of any tort resulting from delay of treatment.
