Clearly, point mutations are a very minor aspect of evolution in such a “shuffle and draw” genetic system.
Equally obvious, information can be duplicated or deleted with extravagant ease. It is in such areas that experimentation goes on, such as the duplication of means of production for optical pigments with slightly different sensitivities.
In this manner, simians acquired an ability to see in three base colors, while many other mammals can see in only two.
Point mutations would never appear to be able to accomplish that.
