Minneapolis struggles with rise of Somali gangs

Islam may well drive some of their behaviors, but I think that oversimplifies them somewhat. Somali gangsters are a permanently bent and twisted criminal society accustomed and prone to violence, entirely lacking in normal human empathy and without a normal sense of morality and inhibition and common decency, and they also happen to be muslim as this religion accommodates these antisocial behaviors nicely. I believe this is a byproduct of the inhospitable and toxic dog-eat-dog environment they come from, where doing evil is the way to get ahead and where good guys end up rotting in the ditch.

Somalia is like Mad Max brought to real life — imagine growing up in that environment and then somehow being transported to a land of plenty like America where all of your paradigms that you’d learned and used all your life were no longer necessary, where it wasn’t necessarily dog-eat-dog and good guys could finish first sometimes. It would be like being a piraña in a goldfish bowl. No wonder they run amuck.

Not making excuses for them of course: they’re still a really serious public menace. But this does perhaps explain their behavior a little more fully than “they’re muslims” because not all muslims are as dangerous as Somali gangsters.
