Dov, I didn’t think you had to pay SS or Medicare out of your unemployment. Federal and state income taxes are required, but I didn’t think the SS/Med tax applied to unemployment.
It’s rough out there. Good luck to you!
That's the problem, the jobless numbers continue to grow, with no turn around or end in sight.
I can assure you that the people I know have been looking for jobs. It is not that easy and never believe what the media says about an economy that is improving.
I never would have thought it could happen to us but it has. And when you see a job that comes along, it is you and thousands of other people competing for that same job.
In N Out Burger opened up a new place in the east valley and it had been reported that over 1,000 people showed up to complete an application.
Remember how I said I thought it would take a while to bankrupt Texas? I was wrong...
That sounds good, but WHERE?!?!
My wife has completely exhausted her unemployment benefits and they aren’t even hiring at Dominoes for delivery drivers!
My wife has over six years experience as an office assistant, payroll clerk and filing clerk and there are NONE of those positions available in my neck of the woods. And they won’t touch her at Wal-Mart or JC Penny’s (not enough “customer service” experience)!
You are completely out of touch with reality. I have a stellar resume for my profession, had headhunters calling me every day for open positions only a year ago and I've been unable to find a job for 6 months now. I can't imagine what the average Joe is going through trying to find a job. But I can tell you one thing, he certainly isn't fawning over the $1,600 a month check he receives from the government. If you think that's a "nice" salary that says more about you than anyone receiving the check.
Your characterization of unemployment as "welfare" is also misguided. "Welfare" is an entitlement designed to give citizens a minimum standard of living. Unemployment is paid by the employer, which means it is a government mandated employment benefit that is factored into total compensation. It is something you EARNED while working.
Finally, a year "vacation"? You have a lot of damn nerve. While some abuse the system, most of the unemployed now spend every day looking for a job. They can't provide for their families or even make payments on a mortgage that was perfectly reasonable before their earning capacity got slashed in half. So they wake up every day to confront that reality, try in vain to change it and see no hope for the future because of what the party in power is doing to our country. You see that as a vacation??? You are twisted.
i am sorry and i hope your wife finds something soon. i did not mean to be flip about the job situation. i keep forgetting that this is affecting people who are not illegal immigrants. i know that sounds arrogant or stupid. i do not mean it that way. my husband is an over the road truck driver, one of the few secure job markets left in this country. he was even laid off for a while, and let me tell you, this miserly stay at home mom was worried. i stretched the budget untill it cried and money was still scarce. i know it is tough out there in the job market, but we were fortunate that hubbymayhem has a cdl license. with that he can get a job almost instantly. other professions do not have that option right now, and i keep forgetting that.
Only someone who is still employed, or a democrat, can be that stupid.
I believe unemployment benefits come from a separate fund paid into by employers. It does not reflect on the general budget situation, which isn't that bad, all things considered.
Borrowing the money is better than taking the stimulus funds with all the red tape and mandates that would entail.
“There are jobs out there, just ones that people don’t want to do.”
My wife has also worked at a oil refinery sweeping and picking up oil sludge, she was a night-time security officer and has flipped burgers, so tell me what job is available that my wife “don’t want to do?” Besides, if the gas prices go up at ALL, a job at minimum wage would BARELY pay to break even if she worked part-time. So, she might as well sit at home and not waste the gas to go to work!
Do you know how belittling that is to a woman that has helped support and raise five children? Do you have any clue what you are talking about? You know what, I am not going to start to comment on the rest of your post(s), because I will probably go into a rant worse than dragnet2!
if it is a choice between your ego and feeding your family i would suggest that NOT taking a job, no matter what, is the true stupidity here. i would also suggest that calling me names is probably not going to improve your employment situation. perhaps you should rule out mcdonalds since it really requires some social skills to deal with the public that pays your salary. you appear to have none.
If I sounded “harsh,” I apologize, but I get on here and lots of people think we are abusing the system or something. I too have an in-demand job (safety professional), but the pay has stagnated, so I can’t even find a better job to supplement our current situation.
Heck, right now I am working the commercial construction industry and that is getting THIN! I will probably have to go back to traveling and doing dangerous oil refinery turn-arounds and spending 9-10 months a year away from the family - but hey, that is IF I can find a company that is hiring!
Perry is doing right, here.
The ‘stimulus’ money would have mandated that unemployment go to people who quit, who are looking for part time work, and for those who move due to a spouse’s job. As bad as the one year on unemployment “insurance” is (and the near-guarantee that UI will be paid, even when the employee is fired for cause), it’s better than we’d see under the stimulus regs.
I’m amazed that people are not ashamed to spend so much time on UI. Get 2 part time jobs. Or 3. My husband delivered pizza for a while in his 30’s when his sales job was just taking off. (And took grief from his boss who was always critical.)
Many of us worked nights and weekends to trade off child care with our spouses or to go to college.
In Pennsylvania, we pay a pittance to the Unemployment fund taken out of our paychecks.
i know what you mean. hubbymayhem wanted to be home weekends and maybe once during the week, but he had to take what he could get. he gets home most weekends, not during the week and gone some long stretches. he would prefer to be home with his family but he does what needs to be done to take care of the bills while i take care of the kids and the homefront. you were not harsh. i was not thinking before typing. like i said, sometimes i forget the jobs mess is rough on lots of people. hubby’s cdl makes it easier for him to find a new job even if it is not perfect. other professions do not have that. stay strong and good luck.
I don’t mean all of Texas is bankrupt...She and I had been speaking the other day about what would happen when Tx unemployment caught up with the rest of the nation, and what would happen when unemployment benefits ran out.
Once they are no longer able to take out these interest free loans, I guess we’ll find out!
Just ask the Mexican illegals for a loan.
The most people get in AZ for unemployment is $240 per week and that is based on the past 18 or so months of income they had while employed. Who can live on that?
