May be of little consolation to you, but possibly many other fathers were allowed to see their kids grow up due to your father's heroism...
Tough thing to deal with, for sure...
Yes it does...
I’ve seen the movie they made about it. My local Christian TV station plays it every so often.
“That’s not easy to do on approach to Miramar with a crippled plane.”
Where he crashed was on short final and if he had a flameout he had no choice, it would flat fallout of the sky into that neighborhood.
Oh c'mon...Who on FR waits for facts before they opine on something???
I figured I was wrong and that's why I stuck the caveat in but was just interested in other's thoughts on it (before the facts came out)...
We all do
Agreed, unless you would not want to compromise your screen name.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss as well. No greater love has a man......
You’re ignorant about tactical aviation as well.
The latest, according to the link to kgtv, is that there are 3 dead and one missing.
Prayers for the families of the deceased, and the departed souls, as well as a salute to our brave service personnel, who are faced with these split second life/death decisions, on a regular basis, so that we may be free.
You must get good milage on that running mouth 'cause it's always in gear...You have anything worth saying that might contribute to the conversation???
“well, thats what my father did
not that anyone ever remembers or cares except the family”
There was a case of a pilot doing that, I think in the sixties, it was heroic and it made a big impression on me as a kid, a lasting impression on me about what a I, as a man, should try to live up to.
I don’t know anything about your dad or if I ever heard about his story, but hero’s never know who is affected by their actions, they never know how young boys are changed, but I’ll bet that his memory lives in more people’s minds than you can know.
“He died at age 34 by refusing to bail out of a crippled jet and rode it into the ground away from a town
I doubt anyone there even knows about it anymore, it was 50 years ago”
I hadn’t read that when I posted, I wonder if it was your dad that made such an impression on me as a boy, at this point it seems likely if it was here in the U.S.. I think of that pilot occasionally, especially on a day like today, but I have also brought him up in conversations all of my life when appropriate, I was too young to know his name or even need to, because it was the act that so affected me, boys have an image in their head that they try to live up to, I have never forgotten my pilot.
Thank you for sharing the story of your father’s noble sacrifice.
What IC said, says it all. Your Dad was a real hero; that must be a rare and awesome legacy to have.
Please know that your mentioning your father’s story has already inspired so many people here online, who will also tell others about it. His legacy lives on.
