I grew up for a while around Chama. Gorgeous country.
Area around Las Vagas, NM is a little weird. Our family was driving on the highway about 50 miles outside of Las Vegas NM, about midnight, headed back to Texas from skiing, when a pickup pulled up behind us. Tailgated us from 65mph to 85 mph, then we slowed down to 35, back up to 55 then 75 back to 55, with him still tailgating. Then he passed as we slowed down again as we were approaching 20 miles out from the township limits of Las Vegas NM.
Then he slowed down to about 35 and when we tried to pass, he’d speed up to avoid us passing him.
After awhile, this went on for a good 45 minutes to an hour, and he was in a flat black short bed pickup, GMC, (this was back in the 70s),..after awhile he sped up and disappeared. As we approached the town limits, we saw him parked in a driveway waiting for us, and he pulled out in fron again, then exited into a bar/saloon, where in the parking lot there were about a dozen other pickups, all painted the same flat black paint like out of a can of Krylon.
We kept on going and didn’t want to slow down.
Some buddies who had grown up between El Paso and Albequerque mentioned Las Vegas NM was known for Mexican drug running gangs in that area. That was some 30 years go, I don’t know what the place is like now.
Puts a different SW flavor on Men in Black.
Freaky.

Lots of places in NE NM I wouldn’t want to go alone or even with body guards . . . particularly at night.
Was the guy in the black pickup Caucasian or what?

Naw, come to Texas for that. Years ago, on one of our traditional family camping vacations in NM I needed some fajita meat (beef skirts actually), they said WHAT??? Now they act like they invented the idea, nope, pure South Texas fare, at least at first.
