The problem is not McCain's campaign staff. Rick Davis and Steve Schmidt have worked miracles with what they have, which amounts to a horde of pissed off Conservatives and Sarah Palin. The problem is McCain himself.
He thinks that he's Teddy Roosevelt running for President in 1904, a time when that politics was a bit more gentlemanly, at least on the surface, and can't bring himself to get down and dirty with Chicago street thug Obama and his criminal ACORN and foreign backers.
Governor Palin is doing a fabulous job under the difficult circumsyances she's being forced to work under, namely toeing McCain's line, but when McCain tells a GOP rally that we have nothing to fear from Obama, what the hell can you do???????????
The New York Time said this?
Is this the same William Kristol who in 1990 was predicting a disastrous loss for us in the first Gulf War? I believe it is.
...soooo Billy tell us...was it banana cream or lemon?
Hey Girlie man......we are in the fight of our life!! The Obama camp is VICIOUS....VICIOUS....have you never seen thqat guy tell Hannity he is a RACIST?? And Burton being so smug while he’s LYING?? We just don’t have those kind of people on our side.
McCain’s going on Letterman Thursday - seems to me that his strategy is to work up tough adversaries (the media), to boost negatives and ratings for his on-air showings and then disarm them face-to-face like a man. Meanwhile, Obama is sliding into old news territory for many and resorting to buying half hour blocks to ensure he’ll be heard late in the game.
I’d rather have Letterman and SNL hype at this point. Gets to the the heart of the youth and undecideds.
Last I saw, the polls had Obama up by four points. It’s a statistical tie, with the scared white vote unwilling to admit to a stranger that they’re afraid to be honest.
The bigger danger is the Obama supporters who insist that anyone not voting for him is a racist.
Palin is drawing crowds in the tens of thousands. Very enthusiastic crowds. Schmidt is a brilliant campaign manager. The problem is in McCain. He is stubborn and wants to do things his own way. But I guess he figures he hasn’t survived this long in life and politics without doing something right. Look how many times he has beat the odds.
I’m far from a Kristol fan , but Kristol is right on this one .
It seems like there are two campaigns at work here . There is no consistent message whatsoever and everytime Palin gets the camapign back on track , they send McCain in a different direction .
I feel bad for Palin , as she is pulling more than her weight and at the same time having to temper it so not to overshadow McCain .
The media is part of the Obama team, Billy.
Can you imagine watching John McCain giving a 30 minute speech on prime time television? No way.
Keep on with the political ads, John.
We just need you to kick some ass at the debates.

As Mika B. said on "Morning Joe" this A.M., "It's just not within McCain's DNA to take off the gloves"
What we have here is another Dole! We know how that approach worked out for him, don't we?
Gee, an article in the NYT telling us how bad the McCain campaign is going-what are the odds?
Wait, is this the same Bill Kristol that pushed McCain as the nominee in the first place? Yes, indeed, it is.
Bill needs to take a hard look in the mirror. I will still hold my nose and vote for McCain, but I was not one of the lemmings jumping off the clift during the primaries. I supported Romney, not because he was perfect (he wasn’t), but I saw this train wreck coming from 100 miles away. In fact, so did the MSM—which is why they built McCain up for years. They did it because he is a deeply flawed man and his nomination translates into a guaranteed loss for the GOP.
At the very least, Romney would have been disciplined (not erratic), knew business (a real plus now), is a sharp debater, has a youthful appearance (like Obama), has a killer instinct, and doesn’t have skeletons in his closet the size of Texas (like the Keating Five). The contrast between Obama and McCain during the debates is striking: Obama looks cool and hip; McCain looks like a shambling corpse.
Well, its too late now—we’re stuck with John, who insists on entertaining us his best Bob Dole impression. I really hope the Republicans have learned their lesson this time—don’t go with candidate the MSM luvs. McCain will lose—I just hope that after an Obama administration, that conservative though isn’t criminalized and its thinkers (like Kristol) don’t wind up in re-education camps.
A great campaign cannot help such a flawed candidate. Obama should be low hanging fruit, and would be for a candidate who truly believes in reducing government.
More panties-in-a-wad drama from Kristol. He knows nothing about what McCain’s people are up to. The polls are at 4%. The debate is looming. He needs to shut up.
Somehow I doubt it would be wise for McCain to take campaign advice from the New York Times.
