Many more will tune in now for this debate. McCain, of course, will be expected to explain why he thought it was important to suspend his campaign and go to DC. He will win over many, IMO, if he explains that he did so because he was extremely concerned about the impact of the Paulson plan and its impact on taxpayers, and, more broadly, free enterprise in this country. He can also mention that he wants a plan that forces Wall Street to pay for Wall Street’s mess. If he’s feeling so emboldened, then he can point out the sad history of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, including his opponents ties to those firms and how the Democrats fought tooth and nail to protect those from any appropriate reforms. He can, of course, point out his attempts to reform Fannie and Freddie three years ago.
Should McCain be able to announce that a plan is close that is markedly different than the Paulson Plan, one that costs substantially less and reduces the impact to taxpayers then he will win the night and the week.
Obama won’t have an answer. He said it wasn’t necessary for him to go, but then he went. If he commits to the latest deal coming down the pike, then he looks like McCain’s lackey. He can, of course, claim that he opposes the deal, but then that actually requires him to take a stand and move to McCain’s right. But then that just highlights that he doesn’t understand the seriousness of the situation and it makes him transparently craven, seeking any way to be different.
What McCain should say- “Debate? I never promised a debate, until this crisis was over. I said I would be here. How can you debate when Our Country is in such a dire crisis? My opponent can afford the time to debate, because he adds nothing to the crisis in Washington. Even his own Party acknowledges he is an empty suit- can deliver- not ready to Lead. Listen Fellow Americans- the Democrats own the votes to carry “Their” solution to the crisis, ANY Time they have the gonads to vote. But they won’t- because they want top cover by us Republicans, but more important Conservatives of all parties. They know if the facts come out, the Democratic Party is the root of this crisis going back to Carter. They know their solution pays off institutions like ACORN- ACORN! Goggle it! They know that 70% of Americans don’t like their solution. We, I, will not allow such a poor deal for the American tax payer to go forward. My opponent has memorized lots of pithy sayings for tonight- you might want to let him say them. He has no where else to go & nothing else to do. I for one, think he also has nothing else to say- but in the issue of fairness- to you the audience,.. suggest you bring him a telepromter. I’m out of here, and suggest those of common and like thinking walk out of this place with me. I have work to do on the Nation’s business. Good night, and God Bless America.
I’d love to see him go into his convention speech mantra, “Fight, fight with me, etc.” That was awesome. The audience would rise and have a ball. What a mandate!!
This on/off debate reminds me of my two boys’ favorite Clint Eastwood movie (Any Which way You Can) where the fight was off then on then off.
Great ideas at 9 and 22!
Johnny Mc:
“I pledge to you ... no, i VOW to you, that my first act as President,
almost as soon as i take my hand off that Bible, will be to demand that
Congress repeal, annul, and repudiate
any form of the rotten deals they are talking about right now.
“If you have sent a Republican Congress and Senate to help me,
i can guarantee that that will be done.
“We shall then work on this crisis calmly and deliberately.
We’ll let all those responsible for it ...
pay for it.
“Now let me tell you all the ways that the Democrats have been responsible for bringing on
this costly crisis .... “
I sure as hell hope so.
