This is a very poorly written article. All that verbage, but no full translation of the stone.

A patriotic an authentic Faith? Excuse me? Anti-Enlightenment Medievalists? How about pompous fools who think they know better than Scripture. Jefferson had a lack of faith and made a religion that fit his lack of faith. Sorry, he did a great many good things but he is not a standard bearer for authentic Christianity.

May we who have read, or posted to this thread, call you "granny dude", from here on out? I love it...

wondering what a "granny dude" might look like, I google images searched the exact term, and actually found one!

Don't worry, I won't be summoning up this image to mind, whenever thinking on this "other" maine-iacal, pet name.

"granny dude",

I like it. I like it.

Now I have to add a word to my T-shirt - I'll have to add "DUDE"

He says further that such a suffering messiah is very different from the traditional Jewish image of the messiah as a triumphal, powerful descendant of King David

So what is Isaiah 53? Chopped liver?

On second thought, it might not fly very well on the 'ol t-shirt. You'd have to be explaining it all the time. Or they might think the "dude" part was because you were butch, or something.

Which would confuse the heck out some folks. Of course, the "gun toting" part might keep a few from even asking.

I'd think twice about asking, myself. 8^)

Thomas Jefferson was a mere man. He was NOT God and had no right to make his own Bible.

Your comments show that you know NOTHING of history. Fundamentalist Christians are exactly WHY you have the rights you do- not Jefferson, not the “Enlightened” Zealots. You have the right to make ignorant statements because of Fundamentalist (And I use the term in the original sense if you care to study a little) Christians.

Study your history books before you come back with such idiocy. Start with where the term “Fundamentalist” comes from and see if it doesn’t correspond with basic accepted doctrine since the time of the apostles. Also look up John Leland and see if your deist supposition holds any water. The very fact that you are able to express these religious beliefs is due in part to Baptists and others who fought for that right.

You are incorrect on almost everything you are saying. I have multiple degrees in history. And, I have a degree in theology so before you go shooting your mouth of you might want to do as I suggested and look up the Fundamentals. Until then, we have nothing else to say to one another. Good day.

Regardless if you believe me or not,as God as my witness, I have two post-grad degrees, (one in History from a secular university and another from a highly respected and accredited Seminary that has been in operation for nearly 150 years) and an undergrad degree in history and in art from another secular university. I am not hiding behind anything. I merely laid out my credentials. I have also taught history at the college level. That isn’t hiding. That is full disclosure. Thus far, all you have laid out insults at Christians and people with any basic understanding of true Christianity verses that which Jefferson espoused.

As to your being open, I haven’t seen such in any of our discourse and have serious doubts concerning the notion.
Having done a thesis on Evangelical Christianity and holding Jefferson up as the paragon of Christian thought shows me that you are anything but open to true Christian belief. Rather, I suspect that you pretty much have your mind made up (as do I).

Still, your broad-brushing today’s Christian theology as a figment of the Middle-Ages also betrays a decided lack of understanding concerning Medieval theology (verses Jefferson’s cut and paste theological method) that is frankly astounding. No doubt you are a big fan of Jean Dominic Croisson and the Jesus Seminar as well.

Oh well. Christianity has withstood the likes of Jefferson’s scissors and the J.S.’s votes and beads and it will withstand anything that the world has to throw at it. Jefferson is dead and knows better now about how he treated the Word of God. In the end, so will everyone who idolizes him.
