Users should consider the preliminary nature of this information and check for updates as additional data becomes available. Population exposure estimates are NOT a direct estimate of earthquake damage; comparable shaking will result in significantly lower losses in regions with well built structures than in regions with vulnerable structures.
Map of MMI contours plotted over population per ˜1 square km (see gray scale bar on top of map). The regions of integer MMI values are separated by the thick contour lines and labeled with Roman numerals. The total population exposure to a given MMI value is obtained by summing the population between the thick contour lines. This total is shown in population exposure table.Exposure table

The 2008 Sichuan earthquake shook Wenchuan County, Sichuan province of the People's Republic of China at 14:28:04 local time (06:28:04 GMT). It had a magnitude of 7.8 Mw according to the State Seismological Bureau of China and United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing and Shanghai, where office buildings swayed with the impact and Vietnam capital Hanoi. The closest major city from the earthquake's epicenter is Chengdu.
The epicenter was at 31.084°N, 103.267°E, in Wenchuan County, Ngawa Prefecture, 90 km northwest of Chengdu, Sichuan, China, with its main tremor so far occurring at 14:28:04 local time (06:28:04 am GMT) on Monday 12 May 2008. Early reports of the earthquake's Richter scale magnitude ranged from 7.6 to 8.0. Five major aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.0 to 6.0 were recorded within two hours of the main tremor.
Office workers in Chengdu reported a "continuous shaking for about two or three minutes", with many people rushing outside.

Prayers for all in harm's way.
Looks like this earthquake may well have been triggered by the continual movement of the Indian plate into the Asian continent. The Himalaya Mts were, and are still being, formed from this slow motion collision which began around 50 million years ago.
Geology of the Himalayas (Origins and growth):
"In the Upper Cretaceous (84 Million yrs ago), the Indian plate began its very rapid northward drift at an average speed of 16 cm/year, covering a distance of about 6000 km [~3600 miles], until the collision of the northwestern part of the Indian passive margin with Eurasia in early Eocene time (48-52 Million yrs ago). Since that time and until today, the Indian continent continues its northwards movement at a slower but still surprisingly fast rate of ~5 cm/year..."

“Children Killed In China Earthquake”
Sad to hear but has anyone ever heard of an earthquake anywhere that ONLY killed adults?
I pray this is nowhere near the tragedy 1976 quake
Tangshan: The Deadliest Earthquake
At 3:42 a.m. on July 28, 1976, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit the sleeping city of Tangshan, in northeastern China. The very large earthquake, striking an area where it was totally unexpected, obliterated the city of Tangshan and killed over 240,000 people - making it the deadliest earthquake of the twentieth century.

From this post, I’ve seen most US people (maybe most people here are working for US goverment) do not know anything about China at all. BUT, you imagine how bad Chinese goverment is and criticize it as your will.
I am from China too, as you may “be suprised” as well , I can connect to this site freely and post any words I like here. (I refered this post to many guys in China, it’s really funny you believe this)
China is not what you think, taking a look at it and its people before criticizing anything.
Just let facts talk.
CNN is now a funny joke.

I want to let the chinese that are really here for support know that I am sorry for being so rude, and crass during this time. Now I do not like the CCP at all and belive in democracy for everyone. I feel angry and jaded at the world at this moment in my life because someone really close to me in my family died a few weeks ago. I have had a rough year and can be very snappy and mean at times. I do apologize and my prayers go out to all the innocents lost. I was just thinking about this last night about my family and my loss and thought I would say sorry.
05/13 bump
All of you have a warm heart. I thank you !
