What about the people they robbed, raped, and killed? No one gives a crap about them.

I think the idea was that the judge was trying to convince them not to rob, rape, and kill anymore. This would be good, yes?

He is still in the pen. He was truly remoarseful...cried and apologized over and over. He had never been in trouble. He had recently moved to Atlanta from a small town in La.

It was so bad and got a lot of media attention in Atlanta---his roomate turned him in. He had come in wearing bloody clothes and the roomate called police.

Jailtime does nothing, either.

Sure it does. For a time, at least, the thugs are prevented from victimizing innocent citizens; which is, of course, the only legitimate function of the justice system.
