I think you’re right. The Plantman may need to tone it down or he may hurt someone’s feelings.
That’s a bad slot for everyone; Core, Donaldson, Graham,.... Where are they now??
I think it would be better for MAL to pick-up Dennis Miller and leave Plant on at night. I enjoy my “raw meat” after dinner.
For claiming not to be a social con, Core was always tipping the apple cart for the public school indoctrination that goes on in the more liberal counties in MD ~ policies that eventually seem to try to find a way out to the conservative districts.
Hopefully, someone else will serve as a clarion on these issues.
I disagreed with Chris more often than not these last few years, but in a way he’s kind of like someone that you know; a neighbor or acquaintance, especially when he talks about his daughter and his family.
Don’t agree all the time, but wish he was still around. Hope that he manages to catch on somewhere else. I’m sure this is a very difficult time for him.
I wish Core well.
Parks rules!
He is the voice inside my head ~ especially when he is screaming!
In this morning’s WASHINGTON POST he said that he would love to hook up with the Washington Nationals’ major league baseball team.
“Core was calm as he broke the news of his dismissal to his wife and 13-year-old daughter yesterday (”We’re going to be fine,” he said), but he broke down in tears when remembering the various charities his listeners had contributed to over the years.”
I taught a couple of years ago, and it was more or less through Core’s prodding that my 5th grade class took up a service project for Fisher House.
I probably wouldn’t have even thought to do it otherwise, thinking that it would be logistically difficult or that we couldn’t generate a lot of goods and materials for the families.
When we completed the project we had a truck full of food, toiletries, supplies and endless prayers for men and women who had been injured while serving in our military.
Now, I’m getting all misty, too.
I’d love to hear Core do the Nats! Even though I am a hapless O’s fan.
“Id love to hear Core do the Nats! Even though I am a hapless Os fan.”
Hear, Hear! I think that, with almost 35 years under his belt in the radio business and supreme Inside-the-Beltway knowledge, that Core will be just fine. It was truly shocking to see all of this go down in flames yesterday, but today I’m kinda indifferent to the whole thing, with a “Heh...whatever!” attitude...
John Batchelor used to be on late night on WMAL. I was just thinking about him last night as I left Walter Reed. He’s waaaaaay too cerebral for the mid-morning slot. I wish he were still on at night.
Batchelor is as brainiac as Dick Carlson and Lt.Col. Bill Cowan on “Danger Zone”, which is on WMAL at 9 p.m. on Sundays... they talk strictly about terrorism, Interpol, national security and international law enforcement issues... they’re great...
Quote: “WMAL is tinkering with a format that has consistently made them millions of dollars. They have had the highest morning drive ratings all of the way back to Harden and Weaver in the early 1970’s, and as an AM station to boot.”
When you say ‘highest’, what numbers are you looking at? From what I gather, WMAL morning drive ratings have been 5th or 6th for years, which is not bad, but it’s not the ‘highest’.
They were for years before talk radio, an AM station that locallyhad the best ratings for morning drive on a consistent basis.
Right, I agree. I was thinking about Batchelor in the evenings in the time slot Chris Plante now occupies, 8 to 10.
Thanks, I'll give them a listen tomorrow night.
Don’t miss Bill Cunningham’s show tonight (Sunday) at 10 p.m. on WMAL. No doubt he’ll discuss his recent McCain rally “debacle”.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
In Chris Plante’s old slot of 8 - 10 p.m., during the week of March 3 through March 7, WMAL will be simulcasting Bob Grant’s show, live through a feed from WABC.
Further announcements will be made later in the week to determine who will eventually take over Chris’ evening slot.
Toodles!

I’m pretty sure you’ve seen this, but this part stood out.
‘Core was calm as he broke the news of his dismissal to his wife and 13-year-old daughter yesterday (”We’re going to be fine,” he said), but he broke down in tears when remembering the various charities his listeners had contributed to over the years.’
Classy guy.
Classy indeed. He did help a lot of charities.
He’ll be fine, seriously. He’s a talented individual with a lot to give and many contacts in this town.
Listening to WMAL this afternoon I noticed the commercial for the new line-up: G&A, Plante, Rush, Sean & Levin... that was quick...
Nobody could ever accuse them of putting a chump in that slot.
Hey Cheaps -
If that’s the case, then WMAL would only hypothetically have 2 local shows (Grandy & Andy, Plante) and 5 national or non-local shows (Rush, Sean, Levin, Grant (?), and Noory) — we need more local shows to cover our pathetic state-level governments and county-level mayhem... some counties in this area are more liberal than Uganda... gotta keep ‘em in check...
I was really pissed when I tuned to 105.9 yesterday and discovered Citadel had canned all the Smooth Jazz personalities and switched to “Oldies” format. Damn!
PS: Anyone know what a "jockless HD2 feed" is?Citadel radio dumps Chris Core, smooth jazz
After a horrific earnings report, embattled radio station owner Citadel Broadcasting fired WMAL/630's Chris Core and dumped WJZW/105.9's smooth jazz format along with its on-air staff. WJZW was flipped to a satellite driven "true oldies" feed with smooth jazz moved to a jockless HD2 feed.A former innocuous dj turned moderately conservative talk show host, Chris Core was axed from WMAL following his Friday late morning broadcast without being allowed an on-air good-bye... that after 33 years of tenure at the station.
----
The D.C. firings match wholesale dumpings of Citadel air staff from stations based in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco among other places. Former WAVA/WMZQ radio disc jockey Sandy Weaver was fired as part of the Atlanta purge.
What's left at WMAL and too many other Citadel stations to count are just mere shells of once great outlets. The inescapable conclusion is that the people who really don't belong in radio are not the ones who were fired but the Citadel executives who bought off these stations in the first place. When will be their Judgment Day?
