But how much did this show of strength cost the American taxpayer?

This is EXACTLY how I want MY tax dollars to be spent. Showing the world not to mess with us and having the means to inflict serious harm to those that would attempt to harm us. Not on Section 8 housing, not on education for illegal aliens, not on ballots in ten different languages, not on politicians dreaming up new ways to steal my freedoms, ad infinitum.

Great job to all the engineers, machinists, designers, floor sweepers, the Navy, Ronald Reagan and everyone else that had a hand in bringing this defensive system to fruition!

As far as positioning goes, except a kill vehicle is much more dense and materially stronger than a person.

" Yes...liberals everywhere are DEEPLY SADDENED...and will focus on the cost "
Or how our enemies won't be able to defend themselves from the mean bad USA military.

Way to go US NAVY !

“Wish I could’a seen it. Should’a been quite a show!”

The Chinese and Russians probably have the pictures and radar telemetry are not going to sleep very well over this.

Ronald Reagan was right and now they are both more concerned than ever.

Hydrazine is the alleged reason.

Wikipedia seems OK for stuff that's not political.

"Since they were prepared to use up to 3 of those $10 million missiles . . ."

So, if my math is correct, we could have a 10,000 strong anti-missile force for $100 billion?

This is as important as the day Sputnik was launched. Now nations can shoot down the satellites they want to.

And more crucial in 2008 than in 1958 when most communication was land based.

I read that there was no warhead... kinetic energy of the satellite hitting the missle, just a slug of sorts to puncture the tank.

It’s a good thing they have the gas grill covered up (right side of pic). I’d hate to think what that rocket exhaust would do to it. LOL.

We have had this sort of capability for twenty or more years. This was a standard anti-missle-missle. Nothing special was needed. The orbit still had it 140mi up, and the warhead was kinetic, and not designed to bring it down, but designed to break it up in smaller pieces.

All they had to do was get the missile in the orbital path and the Satellite ran into it essentially.

The pieces will come down on schedule, probably between the 6th and 8th of march, perhaps somewhat earlier if they were able to scrub of some speed.

Really nothing to celebrate, unless you like the idea of wasting a billion bucks on a satellite that failed shortly after launch about six months ago.

Not a great day, if you know what I mean.

Unlike Obama-Momma,,,,, once again I am VERY PROUD of my country and its technical ability!!!!

We can only be proud if the person who fired the missle was Black.

“jingoistic morons bragging that we fixed our own F***-up”

The real stupid part is we almost certainly LET it come down so we could shoot it down. After all that is getting the most for our money.

A spy satellite that spied on our enemies for how many years, now is used as target practice (after it’s useful life is up) for our MDA efforts!

Brilliant.

Keep on thing in mind. The satellite that was shot down had only the heat signature of the sun’s light reflect on it. A standard missile that is being chased by the anti-missile missile would seek out the heat signature of that missile’s engine.

This was a great day for the U.S. Navy for being able to shoot down a satellite 140 miles above the earth’s surface with a traceable heat signature.
