Huh?
PS3 upconvert is considered very good. Maybe not the best like on an Oppo but i noticed a difference right away.
Color and clarity were greatly improved.

PS3 just had a V1.1 update and with the internal memory, hard drive and RJ45 internet connection will Be a 2.0 player shortly.
Besides who cares?
V2.0 will just stream current crappy previews and stuff from the net. (Maybe V2.0 will eventually include some type of On demand movie service, that would be cool)
V1.1 lets you see the commentary spoken through a picture in picture.
Whoop dee doo.
The PS3 is more than just that though.
It’s an awesome virtual Jukebox that Streams my 2000+ songs, pics and movies from my computer wirelessly across my house into my 7.1 surround.
also a card reader for you dig camera and camcorder.
Sony store lets you dounload games, Demo’s and movie previews.
With USB you can install or play content from a flash drive.
It’s now a DIVX and XVID player also.
with a PSP portable you can access your PS3 wirelessly anywhere in the world with wifi to access your content.
nice Bluetooth remote.
it goes on and on.
I look forward to each new update like a kid at Christmas time!
Oh yea, alot of the games are mind blowing too.

I think this news is going to be a major blow to MS’s Xbox 360.
I hope Sony does not allow MS to install or use Blu-Ray in their game machine in the future at all after this last fiasco.
Then again why would they?

Pfizer’s new inhaled insulin form, Exhubera, failed to sell.

Insulin needles these days are very small and hardly noticeable to seasoned diabetics. Dosage is more acurate with a syringe. There was a worry about long term effects on lung function. Marketing departments need to figure out just because something is new doesn't make it better. They also figured there were a bunch of needle phobic diabetics running around. There aren't.

So spec 2.0 compliance, in player and disc, will do you for a while?

You know there will be spec mods. But will backwards compatibility be maintained? People don’t like getting burned.

When Blu Ray specs were approved there was a 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. It took awhile for the player manufacturers to get to the 2.0 spec. There is no more advanced spec at this time. Who knows what the future will bring. I cannot see anything that would happen in the near future that would not maintain backward compatibility. The specs only affect enhanced "features" that can be put on the disc like PIP. All the players play movies the same and at the same quality. However, there is also the HDMI specs that could influence the PQ. HDMI is now at 1.3 and most new players, and PS3, use this spec. The increased bandwith could be required for "deep color" and other proposed enhancements.

I hope I am not just making things murkier for you.

Thanks Dave! We have very few regular DVDs and no Blu-Ray so far. When prices come down, we’ll probably make the plunge.

Yeah, Mrs. MWT is mildly disgusted, but we’re having fun.

I don’t think you’re making it murky. Watching TV is just a lot more complex than it used to be.

Here’s a couple of practical questions I’ve got for you.

Say I buy a HDTV with a fixed-pixel, native res of 1280X768. I know the TV will de-interlace (if necessary) and re-scale any signal fed. But not all TVs can appropriately handle 1080p input, right? Or is this not right?

I also know I may choose to have this processing done by a player. Under the Blu-ray spec, is the output resolution selectable? Can I choose 720p or 1080i output, though the player is capable of putting out 1080p? And another thing. Is the video content stored on the disc in 1080p? Or does it vary depending on the content, with the player supplying the de-interlacing and re-scaling?

There’s just so much to know and think about.

Not enough hours of life to fritter them away playing a game.

Agreed. At one point about ten years ago I was quite hooked on Duke Nukem. Wasted hundreds of hours. I don't touch them nowadays. Instead I waste my time on FR, but that's another matter.

The bigger problem was that in very few situations would exhubera actually replace the needles. A vast majority of Diabetics still had to take shots.

The other two problems were: a., the size of the unit which was truly huge and rather frightening looking; and B., the $900 per week cost of usage.
