The only “report” I have is that I’ve passed along some of the suggestions on this thread to my SIL. I’m glad I didn’t give her the link to read everything because that would scare the crap out of anybody. Remember, many Freepers suggested they destroy their hard drive and gave specific directions for doing so along with some hysterical posts about finding new homes for their kids since the Feds were surely on their way. Since it’s their computer, their home, and their lives that are involved, it’s also their decision as where to go from here.

As far as securing their network, that’s not stupid, it’s common sense, no different from locking your front door. It’s the first thing I would do if I discovered that my neighbor was accessing the internet via our wireless, regardless of what they were looking at. I’m certain the FBI have sophisticated means to backtrack from their computer if need be.

Ok. I have a problem with this. “Tapping into” a wireless network does not give one the ability to put pornography on someone elses computer on that network. You either have been accessing pornography or you have not been; it is your computer, the wireless is simply access to the internet.

Wow, are you WRONG!

If the wireless network is not secured, and neither are the computers on the network, then you can be in for a world of hurt.

A commercial graphics company that I once did some consulting for had complaints about their Internet access speed. It turned out that their server had been attacked and was a WAREZ server, holding nearly 25GB of pirated software. And this was at a company that supposedly had their Internet access set up by professionals.

Microsoft designed their networking to be easy to use, with security a distant second priority. It's not unusual to be able to get into an unsecured wireless network and then see all sorts of publicly available shares.

The family attorney should be consulted ASAP. Never call the cops first.

Look - you, "ChocChipCookie" - not your SIL, or your BIL, but YOU YOURSELF are aware that someone has been using that network to distribute child porn.

Your husband has even altered the network in a manner which will make it MORE difficult for law enforcement to trace the flow of the child porn.

As far as I can tell, neither you nor your husband has done anything to notify the authorities.

As of right now, both YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND are at risk of prosecution for charges like:

1) conspiracy to distribute
2) conspiracy to obstruct
3) conspiracy to impede
4) etc etc etc

Beyond your own legal liability here, why in Hades hasn't your conscience kicked in and compelled you to do everything in your power to find this pervert and put him down?!?

Do you have no sense of right and wrong?

"However, severing the network connection both alerts the pervert that something is wrong [so that he can take action to destroy the files], and covers up the evidence of the crime in the first place."

I've been following this thread yesterday and today and am amazed at the incredibly ignorant advice given on this thread.

There is absolutely no crime in securing your own network, especially once you realize it is open and has been breached. Sheesh.

ChocChipCookie, I think your husband did the right thing, not that it matters what I think, as you already realize that. My prayers are with your BIL and SIL in how they handle it from here. You've been incredibly patient and gracious with the stupdity displayed on this thread.

It happened as innocently as I described it. Just because you don’t believe it, doesn’t mean it didn’t.
