And do you really think McCain will do anything different?
McCain has called for the surge for years. He won't withdraw from Iraq until it can defend itself, that is, until victory. He will continue President Bush and General Petraeus's strategy: withdrawal based on success. On the other hand, Hillary and Obama has called for starting the withdrawal immediatly.

Point well taken. :-) I’ve got a friend who works for the board of elections here in my state, and I’ve got a query in with her now. :-)

It's a tough choice isn't it? Either watching another country go down the tubes, or my own. Hmmmm...lets think about that one for a minute!
Don't muddy the water with Iraq. I think the future of our Republic is more important than them at the moment. In order to give you a "look" into our perspective, think of it as having to choose which of your children you're going to kill. One MUST die, and you're the one who has to kill him. Which one is it going to be? If you understand this quandary, then you'll partially understand our mentality with this election cycle.
As I said...you'll do what you think is right, and so will we. But look around you and you'll see that what I'm trying to warn about is in PROGRESS as we write. It's happening NOW....it will continue to happen....and when it's over with, your side will spit and cry at us for letting it happen. Maybe you'll be one of the few who will look back on what I've written and be a little less hostile when it happens. Maybe...but I doubt it because you seem fairly fearful about this entire situation, and fear is robbing people of the ability to make rational decisions. That's why we have a bunch of GOP-bots who just can't get past the fact that the GOP has abandoned us. The GOP worked hard to create people like us who have come to the decisions which we have made. We didn't simply become this way over night. We were patient...we wrote letters...we made phone calls...we "stumped" for candidates....and for what?...to be herded into the corral of stupidity and leftism that they've created for us with their miserable pool of candidates? NO THANKS....not anymore. Not to prevent Hillary from taking the Whitehouse...Not to prevent Obama from taking the Whitehouse....not to prevent the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
So it all boils down to two sides eh? Defeat in Iraq or not? Gosh...how "tidy". I'm not buying it, and neither are a lot of other people....enough people to "throw" the election for the GOP.
Truth be known, unless something truly amazing happens, GOP involvement in this election is "token" at best. As soon as McCain is nominated, it will become a race entirely between Hillary Clinton and Barrak Obama. So I suppose the real question about sides should be, which one of those two are you going to side with? You might as well choose one, because people like us are pretty much going to make it a moot point to anything else.

Dubya's fan... clear something up for me please. Are you a Spanish national? Do you hold dual U.S. citizenship? Are you entitled to vote in the American Presidential elections coming up in November of 2008?

Frankly I dont see how people can expect others to hold their noses and vote for their guy but throw a fit when asked to do the same. Keep it simple:
Frankly at 40, Ive yet to see any 'compromise' towards conservatisim. The house victory with the Newt contract wasnt anybody holding their noses... it was breathing deeply a breath of fresh air behind a movement of principles.
aside from that, if I were offered an imperfect candidate that was maybe 80% of what I thought was right, I might compromise, but giving me a 20% [being generous] candidatate and asking me to overlook the bad stuff, then saying Im a 'crybaby' or too rigid is just fearmongering...

I talked to many people in the 2004 election who were voted Bush as the lesser of two evils than Kerry and these people were not tradtional republican or conservative voters.

I do believe that liberalism and its various tenets alienate moderate types so most likely they didnt 'hold their noses' but I shure as hell did ...AGAIN...

Not an American citizen, but conservative (in the American sense) and a supporter of the US and President Bush. I know McCain is wrong on many issues (Romney has better stances than him), but if he’s the nominee, if you want to win in Iraq, the only choice is voting for him.
To: hiredhand
One thing is for certain though...we do not FEAR. We don't fear what will happen by us not all lining up behind some terrible, pandering politician such as John McCain. We do not fear what will come along with a democrat ascending to the Presidency. Don't get me wrong...we're not enthused about it, but we do not fear, and we won't be motivated by fear. I say this in all naked, genuine candor: if you've never considered a career in political speech writing, prior to this... you very definitely should. ;) My hat, sir.

You obviously don’t know Romney’s record and didn’t bother to check. Real conservatives such as Bork, Weyrich, Coulter, and Tancredo did what you did not do — they actually checked his record rather than listening to the spin and phony accusations by the media and McCain/Huckabee.
Most voters such as you buy the spin, which is why we so often get stuck with nominees like McCain.

Thanks. I’m humbled by your kind words. :-)

"Sorry, I cannot go along with teaching the GOP a lesson when the costs would be so high." You and Jim are both right:
- "Teaching the GOP a lesson" in the general election is suicidal; it is what gave us Clinton. (Remember "Send the GOP a message -- vote for Perot"?)
- Jim is right: we have another chance before the General election: the GOP convention. Nothing "sends a party the message" like a bloody floor fight at the convention -- and I remember some humdingers in the past.
~~~~~~
I ***think*** I understand and agree with Jiim's strategy:
- Use the remaining primaries to "shake up the GOP convention", possibly force in a conservative as VP (at least), and -- just possibly -- force in a more conservative candidate for POTUS.
- THEN -- no matter what the convention outcome, turn out en masse and VOTE AGAINST Hillary/Obama (or any and all dems) in the general election.
~~~~~~
Jim, am I close...?

Isn't Ron Paul the most conservative in this race? Why are true conservatives on this forum not voting for him? Because he wants to get the troops out of Iraq now. He was against invading them before we did. He says Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11.
FR used to love him until he spoke against the invasion of Iraq.
Then, it was decided he is a kook, and a coward. Nevermind that he was in the Airforce for 5 years.
It sure is easy talking about how brave President Bush and VP Cheney are for not "cutting and running" from Iraq. They are not over there being shot. But Paul is a coward because he doesn't believe we should have our troops over there being shot for no reason that we can see.
We found and killed Hussein, we should have left then.
But we had no reason to kill him to start with. He was a bad man, but there are a lot of bad men.
