Nothing wrong with the speech? I guess if you like totally open-ended Wilsonianism and promises of endless war, it was good.

OK i think it’s fair to say most conservatives do not support your criticism of the pro defense aspects of McCain’s speech.

I hold those who voted for McCain in the primary responsible for Hillary or Obama in the White House, so they must take the responsiblity.

amen...go McCain...he is a man of honor.

Oh really? Was McCain being a "man of honor" when he organized the Gang of 14 and sold out dozens of good solid Conservative Judges to avoid having to fight the Democrats over their Judicial Filibuster? Look this Cult of Personality McCain campaign works only with people who don't know the McCain record. Don't try pushing it here. We know the McCain record. We are not fooled by this hymns of praise you McCainbots sing.

These two paragraphs totally contradict each other:

It is shameful and dangerous that Senate Democrats are blocking an extension of surveillance powers that enable our intelligence and law enforcement to defend our country against radical Islamic extremists. This election is going to be about big things, not small things. And I intend to fight as hard as I can to ensure that our principles prevail over theirs.

Senator Clinton and Senator Obama want to increase the size of the federal government.

World policing and spreading ourselves thin in endless crusades is the complete opposite of “pro-defense.” During the Kosovo crisis, most conservatives properly recongized that when the criticized McCain’s Wilsonianism.

Right. He has to run as a conservative all the way to the finish line to bring out the base. None of those moves to the “center.” The only way he can win is to draw a bright line between himself and the Democrat and offer the country a clear difference of vision. IAC. it’s a long ways to November and many things can happen.

McCain’s gang of 14 maneuver indeed stopped a few conservative judges AND cleared the way for Alito and Roberts and others, without filibuster, which was what the gang of 14 prevented. Tiny detail of reality you left out.

I’m willing to listen and consider, but he’s got to follow through. Words are fine, and at least he’s mouthing some of the right ones, for now. But give us more than words, Johnnie, give us something of substance - because your record of doing the opposite of what you say when it comes to a lot of issues near and dear to us conservatives isn’t exactly confidence-inspiring. Give us the name of your (really, truly, long-term) conservative Veep, and we might begin to believe you.

“I have defended my position on protecting our Second Amendment rights, including my votes against waiting periods, bans on the so-called “assault weapons,” and illegitimate lawsuits targeting gun manufacturers.”

“I intend to nominate judges who have proven themselves worthy of our trust that they take as their sole responsibility the enforcement of laws made by the people’s elected representatives, judges of the character and quality of Justices Roberts and Alito, judges who can be relied upon to respect the values of the people whose rights, laws and property they are sworn to defend.”

These are a nice start. How about you comment on an issue that involves both of these - the “Heller” case now before the Court? How about you state - several times over the course of the next few weeks, in speeches and in interviews with the liberal press and media - that no matter WHAT the decision, you won’t sign (and will, in fact, strongly oppose) ANY bill that includes ANY provision which limits our RKBA? That’d also be some confirmation that you really mean what you say. Maybe say that Fred Thompson will be your AG, and that you’ll fire that anti-gun Acting ATF Director, Michael J. Sullivan.

Just some thoughts.

Great speech. And I believe that he will do everything he can to accomplish what he says.

Not “Wilsonian” if we are carrying the water for Saudi Arabia, who have done their level best to muck things up in Iraq and elsewhere while making a killing on oil.

I don’t buy it, Senator. You don’t get my vote.

Translation: "I'm going to let the Democrats control the White House."

I respect your opposition for I know that the vast majority of critics to the bill based their opposition in a principled defense of the rule of law.

He respects "bigots"?

I agree. Maybe the McCain hate is now going a little too far. It will be very disturbing if McCain does not pick a true conservative as his running mate. We should see how this plays out!
