“It’s time to move on folks”

Hear, hear.
That great sentiment lasted about ONE reply.

“Well I won’t apologize. Mormonism is a cult. “

Yes, and peanut butter is stickier than earwax.
Even if true, it’s inserting irrelevent cr*p into the Presidential campaign discussion that doesn’t belong there.
Take it back to the seminary.

But, Mormon doctrine does teach that Jesus and Lucifer were brothers in the beginning. THAT TAKES AWAY FROM THE DIETY OF CHRIST.

“Even if Governor Huckabee had been crooked enough to say one thing and do another”

Ah, but he is. He feigned ignorance when he was the keynote speaker at the infamous 1998 SBC convention in SLC where the Baptists were on the hunt to convert Mormons. He knows what the Baptist position and claims about Mormonism are.

At least he exited on this quickly.

“Pettiness against pettiness has no place in politics toward becoming the next POTUS.”

Brilliant statement. Can we use it on all these threads that devolve into hijacked thread of Mormon doctrine arguments?

what is the big deal here...it’s not bigoted to disagree about religion

hell, 150 years ago there were wars over Mormonism....some with outsiders....some tween themselves

saying mean things is just what people do when things get heated

some here need to grow a pair and quit whining

*for the record I usually agree with Mormons politically and don’t think much about them beyond that

**I think Reid must be apostate by any measure and the fact that Romney and his wifey were/are pro-choice makes me wonder just what sort of Mormons were/are they...i would figure being pro-infanticide woulda once upon a time been a hanging offense amongst LDS...and I like that about them

“Romney has address the questions around this amply in his speech:”

No he hasn’t. If you read it closely, all he’s saying is he doesn’t want to answer uncomfortable religious questions (religion doesn’t matter), but he wants the evangelical vote (religion matters). I mean, that may be enough for the gullible, but I gots me an High IQ an kin parse a speaech!

wear it like a badge of honour

today’s conservative really ain’t all that conservative

20 years ago they woulda been Scoop Jackson Dems ...most of them

From what I heard Huckabee say, the reporter asked Huckabee some question on Mormonism. When Mike said that he didn’t know too much about it, the reporter Explained to him some of the beliefs of the Mormon Church. It was in this context that Mike asked the question.

All of you guys KNOW that the reporting on this has been disingenuous and misleading, but since he is not your candidate (and beating your candidate in the polls) you jump on the chance to trash Huckabee. It reminds me of the whole “Fred Admits He Won’t Win” smear. Pathetic.

I’m sorry but it’s not pathetic to point out obvious disingenuousness.

Since the secularist journalists are clueless dolts, they wouldn’t think to ask why Huckster is so innocently unknowledgable about Mormonism, when he’s an SBC preacher, and the 1998 Southern Baptist convention was *in Salt Lake City* they preached the conversion of Mormons to Baptists.

A blog describes it thus:
In 1998, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) descended on Salt Lake City for their annual meeting. If you think that’s an unusual choice, you’d be right. The number of SBC members in Utah is negligible, but the message would be unmistakable. In spite of nearly identical political and social mores, the SBC disdained association with Latter-day Saints in Jerry Falwell’s abortive Moral Majority. As is custom for such annual meetings, there is a massive proselyting effort in the environs of the city, but for Salt Lake, the SBC produced a 50 minute video entitled, “the Mormon Puzzle” and distributed to ALL 40,000 Baptist congregations sending delegates to the meeting. In addition, the SBC also printed over 12,000 copies of “Mormonism Unmasked” The materials characterized Mormonism as a dangerous cult (a dehumanizing Evangelical perjorative) and a major threat to SBC interests. However it mainly instructed “messengers” on how to attack the beliefs of their Mormon targets. There was little doubt that this provocative action by the SBC was designed to be a showdown—the mainstream press sent its largest contingent ever to the Salt Lake City annual meeting, hoping for open warfare. In the end, Mormon church leadership simply encouraged its members to be courteous to their Baptist brethren and the story evaporated.

Now here is the kicker: Huckabee attended and gave a major speech at the 1998 Southern Baptist Pastor’s Conference held in Salt Lake City in conjunction with their National Convention.

He cannot ask “innocently” nor feign not knowing what the SBC thinks of Mormonism. He was there.

He answered all legitimate questions there are to raise and will not answer dumb, irrelevent nitpick doctrinal questions for the justifiable reason that if you were sincere in your question, you wouldnt ask a candidate, you’d ask your local LDS or other sect official/pastor/priest/whatever.
Such questions in a political race context - as has been shown on FR when this stuff comes up - divide people, and as Romney said...

“To do so would enable the very religious test the founders prohibited in the Constitution. No candidate should become the spokesman for his faith. For if he becomes President he will need the prayers of the people of all faiths.” - Mitt Romney

He DID answer your questions that he can answer. He did NOT answer it the way you want him to, and he knew that... that’s why he said:
“”There are some for whom these commitments are not enough. They would prefer it if I would simply distance myself from my religion, say that it is more a tradition than my personal conviction, or disavow one or another of its precepts. That I will not do. I believe in my Mormon faith and I endeavor to live by it. My faith is the faith of my fathers – I will be true to them and to my beliefs.

“Some believe that such a confession of my faith will sink my candidacy. If they are right, so be it. “ - Mitt Romney

So there you are. He gave his answer.

So what? SBC believes that LDS are a cult. LDS believe that SBC is an apostate religoin and that LDS is the only true church.

SBC wanted to convert LDS and LDS send out missionaries to convert SBC. So what?

Huckabee believes in his religion as does Romney. I don’t think that attending a convention where some film critical of Mormonism is played makes you an expert. In fact it might have been that film where Mike heard that Jesus and Lucifer were supposed to be brothers. It is entirely plausible that he doesn’t know much about Mormonism except for a few small pieces.

You could attend a couple of sermons in a baptist church and not learn a whole lot about the tenets of Christianity.

BTW Huckabee has NOTHING to gain by this controversy.

All many of us are asking is for Mormons to “own” their beliefs. It is OK to be heterodox. Just admit it. All in the name of truth in advertising.

that’s a dumb request.

Name a single religious faith that goes around saying “yeah, we are wrong.” Of course they dont.

Of course they own their beliefs, but on their terms. If you have an ounce of religious tolerance in you, you need to tolerate anothers sects ability to define who they are *themselves*. And if they think they are Christian under some definition that is *part* of their faith tradition/claim. you are free to disagree with their definition and say as much, but the idea that they have to *agree* with your view in order to be deemed ‘acceptable’ by you is, well, less than tolerant.

“So what? SBC believes that LDS are a cult. LDS believe that SBC is an apostate religoin and that LDS is the only true church.”

Yeah, well I’m a member of the true catholic and apostolic church, and they are both apostate sects. So what? When I’m faced with an Apostate Huckabee and an Apostate Romney, do I worry about such affiliations, or do I act like a real American patriot and consider the character, competence and vision each will bring to the office as an *individual* and vote accordingly?

Grownups will choose the latter.

“In fact it might have been that film where Mike heard that Jesus and Lucifer were supposed to be brothers. “
Gee, ya think?!?

“BTW Huckabee has NOTHING to gain by this controversy.”

LOL. with supporters like Tim Rude who go around saying “protestants should vote for protestants” who needs more exposure on this, eh? And if you believe that ... coincidently, I’ve noticed Huckabee gaining votes from the super-gullible.
