SS, Who do you support in the primary? Huckabee? I’m not being facetious, seriously asking.
This is a conservative forum, not a GOP forum. that attitude of voting for any Republican not named Hillary is a Republican one. Not a conservative one.
AMEN Soul Seeker. I have always been a conservative first...any more, the GOP really doesn't represent all of my values.
We need to vote our conscience and not what’s popular in the media.
= = =
TRUE, TRUE,
I’m not SS, but I support Duncan Hunter. Huckabee is good too. But Hunter is my first choice right now. If it comes down to one having a better chance over the other, I would go with the one that ULTIMATELY has the best chance.
Oh, yeah, the pro-life crowd was soooo easily persuaded to vote for gerald Ford, Bush 41 in ‘92 when he started talking of a one world order, Dole in ‘96 and Bush didn’t just almost lose the election by a few hundred votes in 2000 because a DUI revelation cast doubt on his credibility. keep lying to ourself if you think enogh of the pro-life crowd won’t walk.
Okay, I seriously support Hunter too. I gave money (which is about all I can do at this point). However, Huckabee confuses me— I thought he’s soft on illegal immigration? What confuses me is that some of the self-professed conservatives who are supporting him seem to forget that right before the 06 disaster, supposedly immigration was the big wedge issue. Why is it now acceptable to vote for Huck? BTW, I think he’s a good man, I’m just trying to get into people’s heads & see what they’re thinking.
Hopefully that will sink in with the numerous supposed conservatives at FR who will vote support Rudy if he is the nominee.
“This is a conservative forum, not a GOP forum. that attitude of voting for any Republican not named Hillary is a Republican one. Not a conservative one.”
So what’s the answer, don’t vote for a RINO, cant vote for the lib, don’t vote and let them win? Or roll the dice on the RINO and hope for the best?
I really favor Hunter. He will be my vote in the Primary. The reason I even suggested Huckabee as a possibility would be if when the time comes to vote, Huckabee is so far ahead of Hunter, that his chances of beating Hunter would be obvious. THEN I might think about that as a alternative. I do hear you though on the immigration issues. I know that he has been lax on that issue.
Initially I supported Duncan Hunter for, I don’t know, at least 6 months? His name recognition never grew though.
Who do I support now? Right now Thompson. I don’t find him a perfect candidate. I don’t find anyoe a perfect candidate. But I find his record solid enough on every issue that matters to the different factions of the GOP base that at the very least i think he can get the usual GOP crowd out to vote. On taxes, pro-life, small government, 2A and amnesty he should barely hold everyone in the coalition. And unlike the establishment crowd in the GOP, I do think it’s important to find a candidate with a record that can reach out to all these groups.
His main knock is CFR, for which he’s admitted to disliking part of it. This is where the not perfect comes into play, but still much better then the alternative.
That’s my main worry. Nominate someone like Rudy and districts/states that SHOULD be safe for Republicans in Congressional, Senatorial and inside state legislators suddenly are up for grabs if enough conservatives sit home. It’s the same worry many Democrats have about Hillary on the ticket, that she’ll hurt down ticket races.
I think Thompson has the potential to attract blue dogs to his candidacy, but even if not, I think he’s strong enough to help us gain back some House seats on the down ticket.
As for Huckabee, he’s a social conservative. Which is cool. But he’s also big government which turns off the libertarians in the party. pro-amnesty which turns off the middle class vote. And he’s made some derogatory statements on the war turning off the Hawk faction.
How about voting for a real conservative in the primary? One that has a chance to win? If all of these so-called conservatives that keep asking “who will you vote for if it’s Rudy vs Hillary” - would not vote for Rudy in the primaries - then that scenario will never happen.
Seems like the simplest solution to me.
the answer is to defeat the RINO in the primary. Not talk up how you’d be willing to vote for any Republican if it comes to it. that kind of talk just encourages the GOP to believe they can nominate Rudy and experience no fall back. rudy’s numbers in the past week have been falling precisely because people have drawn a line in the sand saying they would NEVER vote for him, and that’s causing the people who think he’s so damn electable to reconsider their support of him in the primary.
EXACTLY!!! This is why, I feel Sean Hannity is doing MAJOR DAMAGE right now by supporting Rudy. I have emailed him and let him know, I know he reads FR and he has certainly lost my respect. SUPPORT the RIGHT candidate from the start, Sean!!!
I also liked Thompson. I actually “supported” him waaaay before he was even talked about by anyone else. I had a feeling about him. However, I’ve been less than impressed with his performance— but there’s still time.
My primary vote is meaningless, and I absolutely & enthusiastically will support anyone who gets the R nomination, because frankly, I think the democrats will destroy (and I mean DESTROY) this country. The prolife movement after that will be a complete meaningless joke, I doubt pro-lifers will even be permitted to protest anymore. Christians & the religious right will be relegated to the types of positions that they have in other countries such as Europe where it’ll be a crime for criticising homosexuality (or abortion, or pedophilia, etc...)I’m not kidding.
And I also don’t think politicians can or will ever do jack about abortion. Educating people will. And the proof of that is empirical. Understanding this doesn’t make me an “abortionist”, nor does it make me a liberal. I’m actually quite a bit more conservative than some people who seem to think that a “pro-life” president will be able to wave a wand and make abortion illegal (with a democrat congress & no constitutional amendment). Even though there have been several pro-life presidents over the past several decades, somehow we still have abortions.
At its heart, the abortion issue is a states issue. And an issue that is going to have to be fought personally (figuratively speaking).
Blah blah blah, we could discuss this ad nauseum.
“would not vote for Rudy in the primaries - then that scenario will never happen.”
If the primary was today I would be voting for Fred. Tomorrow; maybe Mitt, but never for Rudy. In the general I would go for anybody but the beast.
There is to much at stake to let the beast control 3-5 Supreme Court nominations!
I used to like Sean & I still do appreciate a lot of the stands he takes - BUT - I cannot stomach it when he starts that Rudy stuff. I have to turn him off!
He is in a position to have a lot of influence & he chooses to shill for a pro-abortion, wife-cheating, gun grabber???
I do believe in the next month or so, when it comes down to the top 2 or 3 candidates, REAL conservatives will start lining up behind Thompson and maybe Romney and their numbers will far surpass Rudy’s.
I think Rudy knows this too & that is why we’re seeing this “rejuvenation” of Rudy support here on Free Republic all of a sudden. Obviously, they’ve received their talking points and are back with that tired, old “Hillary vs Rudy” schtick that’s supposed to scare us all into voting for him.
