A Man of Letters by Thomas Sowell makes plain that Sowell is not interested in moving from California. And that he simply does not want to be bothered. Sowell has F U money, and offers to participate in government bureaucracy is what he says F U to.The last time he went to DC was when he was given a major award, and he was going to turn it down rather than travel to DC until he was told that the prize included $250,000 - and that the head of the organization presenting the award would provide his own private jet to take Sowell to DC and back.
During his SCOTUS hearings Senator Kennedy interrogated Thomas and basically accused him of being a friend of Professor Sowell. Thomas said nothing at the time, and I'm sure it was painful for Thomas to have to bite his tongue.
This book is probably the best I have ever read.
One of many themes in the book is his realization at a young age that while libs profess to want to help minorities, they condescend to them at the same time when they don’t fit the mold, and to the contrary conservatives seemed to at least be much more genuine.
