I am confused. I thought the unions were all for amnesty.

The union bosses obey their Democrat masters, who see illegal immigrants as new Democrat voters. The rank-and-file union membership, who will lose their jobs to these lower wage immigrants, are just beginning to understand the game. The union bosses and their Democrat masters could care less about them. Breaking eggs and all.

“If Mexican highways are safe, American drivers would want to drive in Mexico”

Mexican highways are NOT safe, so there is no point imagining that they are, or might become so.

“Not at all, just that your answer was an answer that a hilary supporter would use.

You’re making the false assumption that the trucker can only do that particular job.

Is the same as “We’re going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good”

It’s not about what a trucker, or anyone, can do. It’s about their right to choose what they do.
Legislation that puts US workers at an unfair disadvantage removes that right.”

I suppose the 52 year old trucker could always teach at M I T, or become 1st violinist at the Boston Symphony..... : )

Loading and unloading a truck at the border is highly inefficient.

Wrong

"You and the other posters that somehow think this bill was a good idea and/or that free trade is some sort of horrible evil need to study basic economics before you make yourselves sound like fools."

You know nothing of economics. Free trade empowers our enemies, and debases our currency. It's a deep leftist concept, first defacated on this country by Col Edward Mandel House, Wilson's communist secretary of state. Learn some history, huh?

The good news is this argument has already been won. We haven’t even had to provide past thread links yet. Hopefully we won’t have to. We’ve had some very enlightening chats on this topic.

Or take up law.

Slip & fall lawyering is one 'competitive advantage' we still retain. Fast talking in english is one tough skill set for non nationals to master.

“Yep. I dare the critics on this thread to drive their SUV into Baja......double dare them. Then come back and let me know about driving a trailer load of consumer merchandise south.....

If they live, and after they’ve paid the mexican police protection money to return to the US border.....lol, they can come back on this thread and preach about free trade and open borders...”

LMAO!! IF they live to tell about it :-).

What evidence do you have to suggest that loading and unloading at the border is efficient? All things being equal, why would you want to load and unload a truck rather than driving through?

All things being equal. You made a claim that it is inefficient. You should support that claim.

Before I would ever agree with your negatives about Cornyn, I would want to look at his amendment. He may want to MAKE SURE that whatever is passed will not be overturned by some sleazy lawers with ACLC by the same California judge that allowed them to roll in the first place. He did vote against HR2764 which among other things allows the use of our tax $ for Nancy P to travel to countries that are State sponsors of terrorism, allows up to 50 people from a gov’t dept to attend a meeting in another country, funds some real wingy organizations with a LOT of money. If it sounds too good to be true, it generally is. Has the House voted on this bill?

We’re about to find out. Another BIG, BIG union that represents the grocery store workers has just filed a suit against the Government for trying to deport illegal workers - who are just here trying to get a job! Believe ACLU may represent them but not sure.

This is all about way more than competition. If the Senate is going to stop one part of the border crossing, they should seal the border - and not with a fence. Ever notice that in interior Mexico, they don’t have fences around their houses, they have WALLS. On the other side, their BIG program didn’t go thru so they are passing it in pieces. See the STRIVE bill now being considered by the House. A couple more months and they will be through and so will we.

"Under NAFTA, Mexico can seek retaliation against the U.S. for failing to adhere to the treaty's requirements, including retaining tariffs on goods that the treaty eliminates, said Sidney Weintraub, a professor emeritus at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs in Austin."

There is definitely a treaty involved which the US is violating. Since when it is ok to violate a treaty.

See post #201. NAFTA is not a treaty.

The President has the same authority and responsiblity to enforce NAFTA as he does for our immigration laws.
