>This sort of thing is usually done by someone who is mentally unbalanced, or given to leftwingnut thoughts.<
How about Commie-professor inspired inebriated anti-war college students during initiation night?
If its Hydrofluoric acid it will etch the stone according to

Some will cause color changes.
If the vandal did research the monument may be permanently stained or etched.
Quick riddle for ya
Whats wrong with this sentence:
A scientist working in a lab invented a substance which will disolve anything it touched.
Patriots and Comrades All:
After several attempts, I was able to contact SGT Booker
of the National Park Service (NPS), to check on the facts
about the defacement of the Vietnam Wall last weekend. He
explained it was a cleaning accident by a Park Ranger and
NOT a defacement as was originally reported by the Vietnam
Veterans of American (VVA). The NPS is regarding this as
an accident instead of an act of vandalism or terrorism.
Our National Commander Patriot Henry Cook III has the
direct phone numbers for SGT Booker of the NPS, and can
verify these facts with him directly. A copy of this
correction is also being sent the VVA for their follow up
and verification. My apology for the error, as sometimes
it is not always possible to reach the NPS immediately.
Any future report of attempted or actual vandalism will
be verified with the NPS in advance, even if that means a
significant delay in reporting the incident.

Have the park police questioned Jane Fonda????
MHarris88, this email has already been retracted by the writer (Steve Cobb), who was, apparently, the victim of misinformation.

Retraction of All Statements on Incident
To All:
Since it is now clear that SGT Steven Booker is not an Official spokesman for the National Park Service (NPS), it is necessary to retract any and all statements citing him as a source on any "cleaning accident" at the Vietnam Wall earlier this week. His phone numbers have been given to all Patriots and Eagles who asked for such information for their independent verification of what happened. This retraction also includes any earlier statements from the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), and other sources, on what actually happened at the Vietnam Wall. Instead, I will rely on the results of ongoing investigations of the National Park Police (NPP), plus the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, and independent investigations by autonomous news media sources such as the Washington Times and FOX News. Their reports will be conclusive for me on what actually happened.
I will also rely on the statement of Lisa Gough, Director of Communications for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, who stated in her press release of Sept. 11, 2007: "The United States Park Police has begun an investigation into the matter, and that investigation is ongoing. Until this investigation is completed, it is premature to speculate whether any intentional act was committed." An additional source of reliance will be the Washington Times, with any follow up stories from their news article of Sep 11 on "Vandals feared at memorial," as cited in previous E-mail messages.
Like many of you, I have my suspicions on what actually happened at the Vietnam Wall, but I prefer not to comment further on any statements from any party of interest on this issue. There was also a similar incident reported to have happened to a Vietnam Wall in Andover, MA, published on Sep 5, 2007, which has been reported in a previous message with the full source included. This was confusing to me, and was shared in an attempt to learn what actually happened, when, and where.
This statement is also sent to Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) members who are not on the national level as blind copies, in order to protect their privacy after several asked not to be included openly in this issue. Thank you for your consideration of my comments and observations.

No it’s not...The answer is he couldn’t have, because he doesn’t have anything to put it in.
Since you know who did it you should turn them or yourself in.
The troops should most defiantly stay.
Heh.
On second examination, the opil trails look like a hill instead of some random pattern (as would be the case of a drip). This seems to indicate and intentional splash pattern.
But don’t quote me on that. I just watched CSI a lot. I’ll wait for the people who actual;ly know what the hell they are doing. :)
These pictures show it was clearly a cleaning accident. Granted, I wouldn't have used a screwdriver to clean the monument, but hey, that's just me. If it wasn't a cleaning accident, I am pretty sure it was done by one of those Freepers or Eagles in order to cast aspersions on the patriotic Americans who only want the best for our military and our country. You know...the folks like these:
For the purposes of propriety, I will leave out the picture of the protestor defecating on a burning American flag. I am sure he just really had to go.
Do you detect a note of sarcasm here? Good, I hope so. It is time we name the obvious. Ann Coulter says it best in her book "Treason". Not one passage...the entire book.
Obviously, if there are guards they do not patrol often enough, or actually care. I wonder if they would allow vets to patrol the “Veteran” monuments?
Then he, or she, or they, should not only be criminally charged, but made to reimburse the taxpayer $$$ for the damage--that should keep them locked up and impoverished for several lifetimes.
You'll get no zero tolerance arguments from this on this one. Desecrating the people's property should be a felony, if it's not already.
These stains don’t appear to have anything to do with the protesters. Please look at the photos below—taken months before and easily found on the web—that show the same stains.
I’d guess it has more to do with rude and disrespectful kids eating or drinking soda while they viewed the wall. You’ve also got to wonder why they Parks Dept hasn’t cleaned this crap up in over three years!!
