Cell phone company will sell you a small device that plugs into a computer port. Install the program from a disc and pay the cell phone company for service. I can get wireless mobile internet anywhere cell phone service is available. The monthly fee is about the same as I used to pay for dialup and a second phone line.

I haven’t been following this intently today, however, I keep hearing ‘due west’, yet from my seat it sure appears to be bearing NW. I just have a hunch that it will impact further north than now predicted.

It's being driven by the mean flow in the Atlantic basin around high pressure systems, but there is no major "kicker" to pull it north. A stubborn upper low near FL has probably been the reason there has been any northerly component of recent. What it does is crucial as far as the U.S. goes... trends have been south again today, so that's a better sign than yesterday.

Heat potential near Jamaica is extremely high... the storm could undergo continuous development on its way to the island.

If we are without power, like in the past, we are just going to have to go someplace that still has A/C. I am too old for this again. We have 4 dogs now, and they will be a problem but I will figure it out when the time comes.

I think Galveston will be far better prepared for this one. After noon on Friday personnel on my floor spent the afternoon covering everything with plastic and duct tape. All desks had to be cleared, computers unplugged and all components individually wrapped in plastic and sealed with tape. All file cabinets were also covered in plastic sheeting and taped.

I live 40 miles inland and spent last year getting a metal roof on my home that can withstand sustained winds up to 160 mph. I also had 3/4” lexan storm panels installed that screw into the bricks on the home. I’m storing photos and important documents in space bags. Foodstuff, water & supplies are already packed and in the car. All I’ll need to do is grab my clothes and the pets and I’m getting out of here. The evacuation for Rita was so stressful it almost killed me. I’m by myself this year so I’m not taking any chances.

Has the low by Florida moved to the west enough to stop influencing the northward track?

REPEATING THE 800 PM AST POSITION...16.0 N...71.0 W. MOVEMENT TOWARD...WEST NEAR 17 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...150 MPH. MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...920 MB.

a metal roof on my home

Had a metal roof installed about four years ago. Love it! Chose the reflective white, and it cut electric bill for a/c 26% in July/August. 40 year warranty. Awesome!

The little northerly kick actually put it back on it’s forecasted track. It was running a bit under, or to the south, before.

I think it did replace the eyewall. The 13:00 zulu recon aircraft reported a concentric eyewall feature, one 11 miles wide, the other 22 miles wide.

It was awful quick if it was, but watching the MIMIC track, it sure looked like it.

That it is, but at least so far, the flight-level winds don't support it...

Steve, do you (or does anyone else here) have the vortex data-translator that was posted back during Rita?

I thought that I bookmarked it, but apparently not :(

Even though this one looks like a regular roof from the street I still had a hard time getting it approved by the homeowner's association. They like the way it looked after it was installed. Also, it cut my electric almost in half this year. My highest bill has been under $180 and I'm in an almost 4,000 sq ft house.

Several of the neighbors are looking into this kind of roof and the permanent storm panels.

I'm saving my dollars and hope to install a natural gas generator to power the whole house next year.

Comprehensive one courtesy Weather Underground (the vortex portion is about one page worth down from the top).
