1 less gun for grandkids to worry about

I suppose this is typical of those who fear firearms. I just don't think the author was wise to publish it with her name in a local paper. She is a regular columnist for the Observer and now every thug in town knows her home is defenseless. That takes more guts and/or less brains than I have.

The whole story is probably made up anyway, hence the anonymity.

Beware any statistic that defines children as 18 or less. I'm surprised they didn't use 21 or less. 90% of those "children" died in crime or gang related violence, not by innocently stumbling over a poorly stored firearm.

You forgot the barf alert. That aside, proper training and storage can go a long ways to minimizing the dangers to innocent children. I would not let the stupidity of other people deter me from protecting my loved ones and myself.

In the 10 years ending in 2006, 486 children under age 18 in North Carolina, alone, died from gun-related injuries.

I wonder how many of those "children" were gangbangers that died in turf wars? I suspect most of them.

The father (the COLONEL) needed the spanking.
And maybe locked into a lecture hall lined with chalk boards, along
with a case of chalk and erasers to write
"I will not leave any firearm unsecured in my home"
for about 48 hours straight.

The story, if true, was one of shame for the father.
And a lucky miss for his daughter and her friend.

I wouldn't expect the newspaper to point this out in a rebuttal letter
or guest column.
There is no such thing as a "fairness doctrine" with most of the
liberal (and DYING, YIPPEE!!!) fish-wrap new-rags.

A couple of points:

Anobody stupid enough to not keep their firearms secure from kids have no business owning them.

Most of these kids quoted in this story who have been killed by guns were probably gangbangers or their victims, intended or accidental.
