"Exactly. The audacity and stupidity of the defeatists is growing a lot on this forum."

No kidding! Kids cannot even graduate from 4 years of college in 4 years these days, and these people expect a country to go from decades of brutal totalitarian oppression to a bright and beaming democracy in less time. The overthrow of Saddam has always been the right thing to do. Now, we have lots of work ahead of us.

I think the worst thing now is for everybody to be the commander-in-chief, when we have a good one

You're satisfied with the military leadership in this war, and I'm not. The families of those who are yet to die in this less-than-total war are likely to come over to my side before this thing is over. The President has done a poor job of explaining why we are still not using overwhelming force to deal with the losses our forces are sustaining.

The difference between you and me, is that you think you’d make a better commander-in-chief than George W. Bush, while I haven’t seen any evidence that anybody could have done any better — including you.

And you're not going to see any better, since it's obvious that "Stay the Course" means fighting like we've been doing so far, with war crimes trials for soldiers who actually try to do their jobs.

Would things get better if we see the following news story some day: "Yesterday, the village of Bumfuqistan, where three American servicemen were killed in an IED attack last week, was wiped off the map by the US Air Force using daisy cutter bombs. In response, both Shiite and Sunni towns have been posting guards on their roadways, with orders to shoot insurgents installing devices. Rosie O'Donnell is furious with Elizabeth Hasselbeck over the change in tactics." Maybe yes, maybe no, but it sure would be worth a shot, wouldn't it?

The commander-in-chief has to walk a fine line between letting all the Iraqis be killed — and killing them all ourselves — to eliminate all the problems in Iraq.

Hmm, well, in his case, it’s only figurative. In the case of our servicemen, it’s a very literal line that they walk.
