He backed down in 2000 against her for the Senate, but he thinks he can prevail nationally while still losing NY. Oddly enough, only Brownback and McCain among the candidates might be able to win their home states.

In TX, one cannot write in a candidate unless that candidate is an OFFICIAL “write-in” candidate, and very few are.
