To really see if “pais” (translated as “servant”) is Matthew 8:5 can be interpreted as “boy lover”, we can consult the New Testament itself. In Luke 7:1-10 this same account about the centurion is given. There Luke uses the Greek word “doulos” (not “pais”). “Doulos” means bond servant (see Romans 1). I should think that a contemporary would better understand the true role of the centurion’s slave—Bond Servant.
