There is one area where the US deserves some international criticism. We dismally fail to teach our children foreign languages. In most parts of the world, especially Europe, people speak multiple languages. But not here. We need to improve our education system in this country. Every child in America should be able to say “Kiss my American ass” in as many languages as possible.

Why not create a national bipartisan commission that would propose ways -- including, but not limited to, sane gun laws -- to push back our culture of violence?

A national bipartisan commission that will no doubt be comprised of the finest minds the Brady Center has to offer. Seriously, E.J. we already have an allegedly bipartisan commission to handle these sorts of things. As a matter of fact, we have 50 of them, they're called state legislatures. We don't need anymore extra-Constitutional bodies operating than we have now. Plus, Virginia Tech already had the most "sane" of all gun control rules, a "gun-free zone" which this incident at Virginia Tech has taught us means "target rich environment."

In other spheres, we act reasonably when faced with new problems. When Richard Reid showed that nasty things could be done with shoes on airplanes, airport security started examining shoes. When liquids were seen as a potential danger, we regulated the quantity of liquids we could take on flights. We barred people from carrying weapons onto airliners long ago.

When islamist nutjobs murdered 3000 American citizens, we started harassing granny at the airport check-in counter, instead of looking at those individuals that fit the "description of the perp". I guess it's OK to profile guns, eh Herr Dionne.

the author is a leftist idiot. But I repeat myself.

Only partially into the article, one is overwhelmed by the lies. How does E.J. lie? Let me try to count the ways:

“try to open a discussion”
“more reasonable weapons statutes”
“equally practical here on the ground”
“smarter gun laws”
“better laws”

At this point, ennui set in. But he did speak the truth at one point:

“This is a stupid argument.”
