"I know lots of people think we should tip, I don't, and I applaud this guy for leaving a DVD,"
You eat out a lot? I bet not at the same restaurants more than once or twice.

"but no one is required to leave a tip"
Actually untrue. Most restaurants CHARGE at least 15% gratuity on groups of 8 or more. And most restaurants do not pay the wait staff minimum wage because they rely on tips to more than compensate. I would agree you do not Have to pay a waiter for poor service, but it is a societal norm to tip for good service.

Never heard of him. Never heard of his show. Never heard of the restaurant.
Well, I've never seen you before, but I have no burning desire to let everyone know about it.
And yet....
Sorry, too hard to resist the voices sometimes..

Well that's what they should have done.

In a related story....
Bill Clinton has been asked not to return to the "Bunny Ranch" in Las Vegas after completing a private "mentoring" session with an employee. Sources say after his "session" was completed he threw some ice cubes at the employee and told her to "put some ice on it, baby".

I find it hard to believe Piven didn't leave a decent tip.
Either way, he sure is great in Entourage.

Nobu Matsuhisa wouldn't be running your run of the mill hash house. I sure the people who serve his fare are very proper. The place just couldn't stay open otherwise.

I want to know where waitresses and servers get their sense of entiltlement. They all think they are owed a tip, when in reality there wages are paid by the people they work for. If they don't want to do their job for the existing pay then they should quit and go elsewhere to work. Tipping is robbery as far as I am concerned. If a tip is part of the meal it should be displayed in the price and "
I don't agree with a single thing you have stated here.
Many states allow a reduction of minimum wage in jobs where tips are a part of the scenario.
Many restaurants have taken the position that groups of 6 or more will AUTOMATICALLY have 15% adde to their bill.
I don't think you have ever worked in a restaurant and dealt with the abuse servers get when it most often is not their fault for the alledged unhappiness of the customer.
Customer is always right? Not where a restaurant is concerned. Things fall apart in the kitchen, and the server gets the heat. Order prepared wrong? Server gets the heat. Customer doesn't quite know what they are ordering and the server gets the heat when the plate comes.
We all have seen what I am saying.
I applaud both the server and the restaurant chain in this case.
This jerk would be banned from my place, also, even if it were a hot dog stand on wheels that serves construction sites.

I'm sort of with you on this one. I've worked both sides of the fence.
Piven is definitely a cheapskate and has probably done this many times before this incident came to light. I hope he and his friends learned something from this episode.
As for the waiter/waitress/server/waitperson: You have to learn to expect this from time to time. **You are there to serve.** If you not getting the level of reimbursement from the customers that you expect, you better start raising your professional sights and standards. Throwing DVDs (or fits) at customers - or clients, associates, business partners, or anyone that you deal with in real life will ensure the demise of your salary. Count on it.

He's one of the funniest people in showbiz, imo. When he was walking out I can just hear him saying, "This is me leaving. This is me leaving." (Old School reference)
I don't think we're getting the whole story here, by a long shot.

You eat out a lot? I bet not at the same restaurants more than once or twice.LOL, how true. If not, this person has eaten their share of spit or worse. Years ago, when I was in college, I worked in restaurant. One of the waiters was nuts. I'm talking Joe Pesce/Goodfellas nuts. He had a party of four. Before they even ordered, someone in the party made a wisecrack to the waiter. The soda machine was off to the side. I saw him with my own eyes, spit in all four glasses. He caught my eye, and my blood ran cold. It's not a myth, waiters really do these things.
To: Hildy
That would be funny, since one of his first roles was Ellen's friend on her sitcom. But I've read the opposite, that he's a manwhore. Thank you for clearing that up. Those of us in our LATE forties, never married, get tired of the assumption, when clearly, most of us simply cannot see ourselves tied to a single woman for life.
Manwhore is a bit strong, I prefer 'man-slut' instead. Whores get paid.

==The outraged server threw the DVD at the celebrity diner Just a guess.
If I'd busted my hump on an unexpected 12-top for less than minimum wage and received a DVD set as payment for my hard work... I'd probably throw it back at him too. If the guests were unusually needy, that'd be about all it take to drive me from "the customer is always right" to throwing a DVD at the self absorbed...person...in question.

I'm worry for the word. I'm with you Bud. Some people just shouldn't marry. And that's not a bad thing at all.
