and the DEC can't figure out why the deer take has been low the last few seasons... go figure.
My wife saw the X-rays of a woman killed by a cougar up in the foothills several years ago. Said it basically looked like the victim had been struck by a car: Spine completely severed, heart and other internal organs ripped loose, all from the impact of the cat's initial strike. They like to get a running start and slam into you so hard, the impact alone kills you.
Add two more confirmed sightings, confirmed by myself, but still quite accurate, here in ne Ohio in the past five years. Don't give a shit what the guvment says.
The wildlife folks dismissed sightings by farmers in Kansas for years--mistook it for a bobcat, they said. Like people who live off the land wouldn't know the difference.
(Then one showed up on the University of Kansas campus. http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2004/jan/28/cougar_sightings_cause/) But wildlife types were still saying it could have been a pet that escaped.
The old timers simply say that where you have deer you'll have cougars.
To prevent the State of Maine from being overun with dangerous animals, the legislature is considering a Cougar Tax proposed by Governor Baldacci to control these ravenous beasts.
Governor Baldacci is concerned that the ferocious felines might pose a problem especially for Women, Children, Gays and Lesbians, and Members of Federally Protected Minority groups.
The $1.00 per gallon tax will apply to Gasoline, Diesel Fuel, Kerosene, Soda Pop, Milk, and Baby Formula. The proceeds would be used to hire Somali trackers out of Lewiston-Auburn to pinpoint every Mountain Lion in the State and enroll them in a predator-rehabilitation program. Except for the rehabilitation part, the proposed program would be modeled on the George Bush Border Control "Catch and Release" Program.
I almost hit the four Border Patrol agents chasing it...
We just recently had a sighting near Williamsport, PA.
This has been going on for many, many years. Most wildlife officials are too stupid to think for themselves, so they look at the USFWS map and say "no", can't be a cougar here.
The species is rebounding.
That Canadian Lynx should have been welcomed. He (or she) was coming to Maine just to do a job a Somali wouldn't do.
Anyway, if we get enough Canadian Lynx across the border, Baldacci can tax them, too.
Lot's of large undeveloped area on the East Coast that could provide panther habitat. SE Georgia, Eastern Carolina, Upstate NY, VT, HN and Maine.
Gun grabbers are very much in favor of Predator reintrroduction in various Eastern States as part of a long term effort to eliminate the "hunting need" argument against gun control.
The government fellows are quite right. Many local petting zoos, farmers, and meth-cooking motorcycle gangs keep these warm, lovable, sleek-coated cats as pets. *
It is not very patriotic of you to doubt our government fish and game people on this issue.
*Or quite possibly vice-versa.
