Catholic ping!
Unbelievable. I don't know how Pope Benedict has time to sleep. It's just one thing after another. Prayers for his health and strength.
Yeah, the enemy inside.
"Pope Benedict -please dont spare the rod in dealing with these children."
The American clergy is riding a very fine line, as well.
Old news, already dealt with by Card. Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) in the 1984 CDF document, INSTRUCTION ON CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE "THEOLOGY OF LIBERATION."
Well apparently some people didn't get the memo.
Actually, liberation theology reached its high water mark a generation ago, and has been dying ever since. Its proponents are mostly aging hippies.
Populism is another matter. Latin America seems doomed to cycles of left and right wing dictatorship until the end of time.
I must say, Bush missed his window of opportunity when Chavez was thrown out in that early coup. He shouldn't be touring Latin America now, giving speeches and providing an enemy for the populist propagandists to hate. He should have sent in the CIA and removed Chavez before this latest left-wing cycle took off.

"THEOLOGY OF LIBERATION"
VII
MARXIST ANALYSIS
9. Let us recall the fact that atheism and the denial of the human person, his liberty and rights, are at the core of the Marxist theory. This theory, then, contains errors which directly threaten the truths of the faith regarding the eternal destiny of individual persons. Moreover, to attempt to integrate into theology an analysis whose criterion of interpretation depends on this atheistic conception is to involve oneself in terrible contradictions. What is more, this misunderstanding of the spiritual nature of the person leads to a total subordination of the person to the collectivity, and thus to the denial of the principles of a social and political life which is in keeping with human dignity.

ORIENTATIONS
11. The class struggle as a road toward a classless society is a myth which slows reform and aggravates poverty and injustice. Those who allow themselves to be caught up in fascination with this myth should reflect on the bitter examples history has to offer about where it leads. They would then understand that we are not talking here about abandoning an effective means of struggle on behalf of the poor for an ideal which has no practical effects. On the contrary, we are talking about freeing oneself from a delusion in order to base oneself squarely on the Gospel and its power of realization.
And most importantly:
The intense concern of the Church, the bride of Christ, for the needs of mankind, their joys and their hopes, their pains and their struggles, is nothing other than the graet desire to be present to them in order to enlighten them with the light of Christ, and join them all to Him, their only Savior. It can never mean that the Church is conforming to the things of this world, nor that she is lessening the earnestness with which she awaits her Lord and the eternal Kingdom." [35]

Oh....the sinfulness of Liberalism.
Um, not with this Pope.
Thank you, for posting the link!
Good comment by Cicero. While preoccupied with the Middle East we have ignored our own back yard to our continuing cost. We failed to take out Castro in the early years when we had a chance, and we missed the same opportunity with Chavez. There are now only two substantial countries on the South American continent which are not fundamentally hostile to us: Colombia and Peru. Argentina, Brazil, and Chile are all on the left, and both Bolivia and Ecuador have Chavez clones in charge.
John Paul II wagging his finger at the bemused Cardenal on the tarmac at Managua Airport.
I wouldn't worry about Pope Benedict, he studied at the feet of one of the greatest Cold-Warriors of the 20th century. (Pope John Paul II for those of you in Rio Linda)
I worry about him often. I pray he will be with us for a long time, but who knows what plans God has for him?
