The White House got way too cute in this whole matter.
On DAY ONE, Cheney needed to hold a brief press conference and tell the press, "I didn't send this low level lackey, Joe Wilson, anywhere. His wife, Valerie Plame, who works at the CIA, apparently had a hand in sending Wilson on this silly junket. I have ordered an investigation and will let you know the facts when I get them. Thank you."
Sorry, but I am having some difficulty working up a lot of sympathy in this mess.
I agree that a Cheney statement early on would have been preferable, but you know what they say about hindsight.
I am convinced that from the beginning this was a plan to damage or bring down the administration. The White House had no way of knowing what would result from Joe Wilson's op-ed piece. A nobody 'diplomat' spouts off to the NYT . . . happens every day. Do you react to all of them?
Even before the article appeared, all players were in place and following the script.
Yeah, they did. The jury determined that OJ was not guilty too.
I do believe we have a great justice system in our country, but it isn't perfect.
re: According to every lawyer I have ever known, guilt or innocence is secondary to the conduct of the trial.
Thus we see a glimpse of the genesis of the problem... /grin

Pardon me if I don't take the judgment of Denis' (one n) minions.
It is very simple: Libby was indicted because he worked for Marc Rich and he was convicted because he worked for Dick Cheney.
Very good comments Dave.
Libby talked and Berger walked.
Bumperoo!
