I've canceled credit cards without it affecting my credit score but you are right about doing it over the phone, they'll argue with you for hours not to do it if you allow them to.

Skip the hassle, send them a letter that includes the name on the card and the account number. Tell them to close the account and verify to you via U.S. mail that they have done so. If you ask for that verification they must and will provide it.

Is there not a law which precludes the use of the SS # as a universal ID?

I don't think so anymore. I cannot do a mortgage for someone without one.

On a side note I'd support a "Credit ID" number in lieu of using SSN, but that's another topic...basically, the credit bureaus assign each individual an ID at the time the person decides they may apply for credit and it stays for life. As it stands, not using SSN on credit apps leaves you wide open for identity theft and fraud as there's no way to prove you're not the same Jack Jones as a guy in Alaska that ran his credit cards up to a hundred grand.

If they notice they've had even 5% - 10% of their cardholders cancel their accounts in objection to this policy, they'll listen up.

Every store, every gas station, every public school, every motel, etc., that does business with "everyone" is, I guess, "profiting from illegal activity."

Everyone should be required to show their SS card for any commercial transaction. Only then can we be truly free.

It's good to have 2-4 accounts open. Even the ones that are zero balance, use once or twice a year to keep open. When you close the account you loose the credit history.

If you're not buying a car or house in the next six months go ahead and close B of A and open somehwre else.

More Americans killed by illegal aliens than Iraq war, study says

Illegal Aliens Claim They Are Not Criminals

Illegal aliens are killing more Americans than the Iraq war, says a new report from Family Security Matters that estimates some 2,158 murders are committed every year by illegal aliens in the U.S.  The group says that number is more than 15 percent of all the murders reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the U.S. and about three times the representation of illegal aliens in the general population.

program was created to help consumers who lack certain financial tools.

Who would these people be?

Am I mistaken in my belief that even a new born baby is required to obtain a Social Security number?

You are NOT specific about the applicant needing to use a SOCIAL SECURITY card to open a bank account.

I was required to have both my social security card and a certified birth certificate to open a new account here in Nevada 2 years ago. I was told it was because of the Patriot Act.

IF an illegal does not have a social security card that is legal, then please explain how they can open ANY account with the B of A??? Please be very specific. I am a life-long bookkeeper. I don't like vague answers.

Of course they won't stop it. They know that the PC establishment will back them and there will soon be general amnesty plus accelerated citizenship for all the illegals.

BINGO! All of this BS about following the law,m yada, yada, yada, is a smoke screen. If you are living in the US and working, (even with a green card) you have a SS #. The ONLY people living in the US without a SS # are illegals!

>>>Why would self canceling a credit card rarely used affect your credit score? Don't make sense to me.<<<

Actually, closing an unused account should help the credit score, as one of the factors in a score is the limit on open accounts.

Let me first preface this by saying that credit scores are stupid. However, he's right: cancelling a credit card could hurt your credit score because one way in which your credit score is calculated is by the amount of available, unused credit that you have. For instance, if you have a mastercard that you never use with a $10,000 limit, if you cancel that card, your total available credit drops, which would hurt your score.

I know it doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's the way it is.

I haven't lost credit history on credit cards I have cancelled. My credit report says "closed at customer's request" but still has the historical data.

BofA is doing the old smokescreen trick. They will open accounts for illegals with an ITIN that is given out by the feds and a Matricula Consular card.
You can thank George Bush's administration for making the ITIN popular.

Oops I forgot the link. Ed Royce says the ITIN was carved out by Bush and the Democrats.

"I'm wearing my flame resistant clothing. I see nothing wrong with what BoA is doing. It's no more illegal, immoral, or unjustified than any other transaction in which SS# are not exchanged. My understanding is that the program applies to anyone willing to keep a checking account with BoA. It's not BoA's responsibility to avoid making money legally."

It is more difficult to rent a car, take a flight, or even rent a motel room without a credit card. All this is doing is making it easier for those that wish to harm us to do so.
