McCain cannot carry Rummy's jock strap. The war was won. The peace was bungled by the State Department and the MSM constantly hamstringing out soldire's actions with "torture" and "massacre" tales.

Today I talked with a fellow that works in our local library. He is what people call a bit "slow." However I find him to be bright and thought-out in our conversations. He loves politics and is a Conservative! His 30 year collection of political campaign buttons are on display at the library. Today he told me that he is getting the latest button,Hillary/McCain! I asked him if he thought that would be the running ticket and he replied"Oh yeah...They have printed the buttons already."
Man ,what a team of doom and gloom that will be!

There he goes again. Just when I was starting to forget how McNut can be a backstabber, he`s back. How he thinks that taking shots at Bush AT THIS MOMENT is going to help the War effort or get folks to switch their vote to him is insa ne.

Exactly, and this "dissolving the Iraqi Army" claim is just as ridicuolus as the Dems line "If we knew then what we know now"...

McCain's assessment of anyone, let alone Donald Rumsfeld, should be given little credence.
McPain is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, brightest light in the chandelier, Rumsfeld on a intellectual level could run circles around McCain ... McCain knows it and in his typical non-intellectual shoot from the hip style is endeavoring to smear a man by far his superior in every capacity.

Valid criticism absolutely counts. Such a critique must come from a foundation of credibility and knowledge. In other-words the person making the criticism must have something akin to credibility.
McCain never was a high level commander of military forces. I'm not sure if he ever did hold a command of any kind of combat unit. I'm unaware of his attendance and graduation from any schools of high command or military strategy. While his service as a combat pilot, and subsequent capture and imprisonment is worthy of respect, he doe not possess any special knowledge or education that would make him specially qualified to comment on the long term strategy and tactics in any armed conflict. I would imagine he should have some expertise in air combat operations, as that was what he did, not not from a command perspective, and certainly not from a ground combat command perspective.
We are at a stage where we have few military commanders that have any expertise in occupation-type of experience. The last batch of military commanders that had to deal with such a unique situation as we have in Iraq served during World War II. We don't need a Marshall Plan, nor do we need to soft spinelessness of Eisenhower. Instead we need the steely determination and sixth sense of General Patton. What needs to be done in Iraq is not going to be successful if meekly or softy attempted. We must be firm, relentless, and extremely aggressive in dealing with the problems there. Does anyone here think McCain possesses those qualities? I believe that Duncan Hunter does, Rudy might, Mitt unlikely but who knows, but McCain? In my opinion his opinion is worthless because it comes not from a core set of firm convictions and values, he's just running with what appears to be the convenient political current of the moment.

The problem with Rumsfield is that he ran a tight ship and did not bow to the 'elected officials'. He is the kind of guy that was need and is needed. He in my estimation is a 100% American hero.
To: LM_Guy
McCain is hedging his bets. If Iraq turns out ok then he claims it happened because Rummy was canned and there was new leadership put in place but if it turns out bad then it's Rummy's fault.

If I knew then what I know now, I would be incredibly wealthy from timing the stock market and betting on elections, football and basketball games. I would never lose a poker tournament. I would have never married my first wife. (Also, I would not have purchased the burgundy sportcoat on sale at Lands End in 1980 - really awful!).
Life is perfect with 20/20 hindsight.

I disagree.
When people can look back dispassionately and not get caught up in the personal attacks and emotional manipulation of a 24x7x365 slander campaign that has been underway for years now against the President and Rumsfeld, President Bush and SecDef Rumsfeld are going to be cast in a much more positive light.
Anyone who believes anything that comes out of McCain's piehole needs a reality readjustment. If McCain's part in CFR didn't demonstrate that to you, and his contradictory and nearly schizophrenic statements regarding Iraq over the last two years didn't indicate that he is simply being a political animal, then you are missing the point.

I agree that the criticism of DR is probably valid, at least from what I've read. Another poster above noted additional valid points. However, McCain isn't saying this for the purposes of contructive criticism that could lead to improvements. He's saying it to regain his status as the MSM's anti-Bush darling, all while also trying to move to the right. In other words, it's political. Which bring me to reaffirm my ealier comment to McCain above.
