Nobody knows. Personally, I think President Bush should have gone after Syria several years ago, when he still had the votes. Syria is one of the major supporters of the terrorists in Iraq, as well as a major rogue regime that impacts the whole region, including Israel.
Iran is a tougher nut, but if we had taken Syria down earlier, it would have been more isolated and have fewer channels to destabilize Iraq.
It's not too late. I think Bush has more to lose if he does nothing than if he strikes now. Better late than never.
Oddly, there's one new plus, which is that the Saudis are now leaning on the State Department and the CIA, and presumably all those ancient former diplomants who constantly leak to the NY Times, urging us to take down Syria before the Shiites take over the Middle East. I'll bet the Saudis are bribing everyone in sight to go along with the program.
Your analysis has a flaw: the Syrians and Saudis are Sunni Muslims.
But the terrorist organization is Shiite, I believe. And Iran has been funneling terrorism through Syria. There was a story here just yesterday that the Saudis want us to use the CIA to prop up Lebanon.
I can't find that particular article, but here's another related one:

And if you search for Saudi Lebanon you'll find several others. For instance, the Saudis just gave some aid money to the Lebanese government to help prop it up against Syrian undermining.
Didn't think a big sarcasm warning was necessary but...
Me too. McCarthy defended Fitzgerald strenuously and repeatedly on NRO and then as Fitz became less and less defensible McCarthy fell silent and none of the others at NRO called him on it, that I recall. Reminds me of the government itself. People put their personal relationships above their principles thus betraying a public trust. Sad.
