Which I immediately took as a slam at Pres. Bush...but then I heard someone on Brit's panel comment that at one point, Pres. Ford was accused of that during his presidency."
Ford attempted to correct and rebalance the "imperial" presidency after Nixon. Remember, Nixon was the one who put the White House guard in uniforms that looked like they were out of a Viennese operetta.
A slam at Bush?!? Am I the only one here old enough to remember the Nixon and Ford presidencies??
I am plenty old enough (unfortunately, LOL) to have heard that about Nixon's administration...but, I was too busy in the 70's getting married, and then having babies.
I was so ignorant...the only thing I really remember is the gas lines...waiting in a hot car for hours with two little kids...NOT in carseats, btw.

Then you're older than I am - I was 19 when Ford took office, and thank heaven marriage and children were the farthest thing from my mind back then. :) And since I hadn't learned how to drive yet, the gas crisis didn't affect me; I just assumed the era of private transportation was over, and I had missed it.
I was 20 in l972...I got married that year...and I have been married to the same man since then.
He had just gotten back from Viet Nam, was 7 years older than I was....we waited 3 years to have children..
But, I just didn't pay attention to politics back then..
Oh...then my daughter came in 76...and my son in 78.
The rest is history....I concentrated on the kids and work until about 8 years ago...but, then I had a grandchild, and started babysitting her every day...and now I have another grchild almost 2...
Someday I may have time to REALLY pay attention to politics...LOL
I finally was able to see the Funeral tonight. It was a lovely and I'm so glad that I saw it. Rummy was exceptional, as always. He brought tears to my eyes on several occassions.
As for Carter, I think he was trying to convey that he was there as President Ford's friend and cohort, not just as a past president doing his duty. His eulogy wasn't nearly as bad as I expected after seeing the single blip that upset me earlier today. I was much relieved for Betty and the children since I imagined Carter slighting them. He did not.
I was surprised to hear that Ford and Carter were close. It seems the President Ford was a true Christian and loved all people. His ability to take Carter as a friend without despising him makes me admire President Ford even more. While I did not agree with all of President Ford's policies, I am filled with deep admiration for this President and man that is assuredly in Heaven at this moment.
