Ending globalization is not a solution. Pulling out of the world will pull the would-be conquerors into our own continent.

Reagan won the Cold War, in part, by ignoring the State Fepartment and bypassing the CIA which was still delivering its annual assessment that the Soviet economy was expanding at twice the rate of the American economy as it had been, according to CIA estimation, since 1920 or so.

Ending globalization is not a solution. How much of a military component do you believe is necessary to make a globalized economy function?
Do you believe that we need American military formations in every country that has a substantial American economic presence?
If not, why not?

No, we do not have to preserve our civilization and, as a nation and as a culture, we may well not even try. A large portion of our political culture and the great majority of our educational establishment is pretty much dedicated to undermining and dissolving our civilization in favor of the barbarians.

The questions are simply silly. The military does not make a global economy function. A truly global freemarket economy would seriously reduce the use of the military. It is in those countries that are outsiede of the system that seek conquest. Make no mistake, the mohammedans seek conquest and their ambitions are not trivial, they seek the whole world. The Islamist vision is much more expansive than the NAZIs' was. The Communists had such a vision but lacked the Islamic love of their own Death as a way to implement that vision.

Actually, the date was 1947. The first Secretary of Defense was James Forrestal, who had been Secretary of the Navy--until then there had been two cabinet officers, Secretary of the Army and Secretary of the Navy, which was reduced to one with the reorganization.
Victor Krulak's book on the history of the USMC, First to Fight, has an interesting treatment of the struggles preceding the establishment of the new department and the threat to the Marine Corps posed by Harry Truman's dismissive attitude towards them.

I dearly understand the point Mr. Peters is making. And I do not forget all that I've learned from WWI, WWII, and Korea Vets. WWII, in Germany, American troops being shot at from a building, deterring their progress in taking a specific part of the city. Recon guys get close. They observe the "warriors" are a bunch of teenage Nazi females shooting at them. Recon takes them out.
No cameras and no journalists were there.
I see Mr. Peter's point, and I add SecDef Rumsfeld's point: We are fighting a war like none other before.
Tale out of New Orleans, today. Former military (POSSIBLY served in Iraq) strangles and dismembers and cooks girlfriend's body parts.
"Bowen had been in the military, possibly serving in iraq, according to Lott. He was angry about his time served, but she could not specify exactly why. "
Flick "Coming Home" redux by the MSM.
This war is very different from past wars.

"...the officers in question have lost sight of the strategic morality of winning."
The upper crust of our Officer Corps is more political than military. All seek that general's star before retirement. That means they tell elected officials what they want to hear, make very little proactive decisions in fear of failing, and respond to nothing unless it endangers their promotability.
