Islam is robust physically and does possess a large population. However, it has no defense from the West if we decide our own survival is at stake and we take the gloves off. After about 30 minutes from the 'Go' command, the population of the Islamic Empire will shrink from 1 Billion to about 100 Million. And there is absolutely nothing Islam can do about it.

I suspect that the Holy Father was not clueless as to how that particular quote would be received in the Islamic world...and that it worked as intended.

However I think that the Pope expected some Islamic introspection and self-evaluation after the inevitable reaction in the streets. It didn't come.
