"Edward is a Christian name"
Edward Roffman tells us, I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a home with strong Jewish roots. My parents are both fluent Yiddish speakers, and my identification with Judaism has always been strong, although worship and ritual observance were not major components in my upbringing. My discovery of the vitality of worship and the importance of observance has constituted a major journey of my adult life.
I love teaching prayer, song, chant, and the myriad facets of our Jewish tradition to adults and children. I envision my teaching to be similar to gardening. Some of the seeds that I plant will take root quickly, and some may not germinate or grow for many years. The process of my own personal development as a Cantor was influenced by seeds of Jewish learning that were planted in me as a child. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to develop and encourage appreciation of the immeasurable joy of Jewish worship within my congregation, B'nai Israel in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Good point. "Hamilton Sanchez" is a very Brazilian name, and he was from Newark, where there is a large Portuguese and Lusophone community. Still, most Iberian Jews who ended up in the Americas were "New Christians" and under watch of the Inquisition. This Sanchez might come from an observant Sephardi family (although the name "Hamilton" indicates that he does not) or from a "crypto-Jewish" family of Catholics who retain some Jewish practices. There are many in Brazil.
Edward is a Christian name, in that is recognizes St. Edward. I would imagine that Edward Roffman's Hebrew name is not "Edward" though. And I certainly wouldn't bet the farm on the fact that Edward McDonald is the son of two fluent Yiddish speakers.
Which is not to say there are no Irish Jews, just to say that Edward McDonald is probably a nominal Christian. And certainly an accused murderer.
That may be true or not, but in both cases has nothing to do with the silly writer's of the article in question idea, that one can identify someone as "a Muslim without even knowing his nationality".
I mean, a national of any country - Ghana, Albania or France - can put a table cloth or a diaper on his head and will be identified as a Muslim... but how will you know he's also a French (or Albanian)?
Here is another "caricature" Mr. Silverstein, which is predicated upon MY reality-based experience, as evidenced by ALL of the terrorists activities which have befallen the West and all Infidels over the past 5 years, as well as most others, during the past 15 - 20 years.
It is because Chechnya is part of Russia. In Russia, you can cheaply hire someone for literally anything - human life is the sheapest possible commodity there.
For instance, in the book "The Osama bin Laden I know" one of OBL's closest aids mentiones an passan that his master left Afghanistan for Sudan by a jet with a Russian pilot... and that had happend when the Russians were still fighting in Afghanistan.
If it walks like a duck and looks like a duck....
Wrote real fast...
I think anyone wearing a diaper on his head will be identified as something other than Muslim.
"Crazy" probably, but not "Muslim".
In international airports, nationality can be seen in passports. In less formal situations, accent, syntax, manners, etc. give hints as to what country someone is from.
That often gives you an advantage...
Didn't expect that!
It may be not, but a Muslim majority leads to other similarities. For instance, the heavily Islamist Taliban made the drug manufacturing and trade the main source of the regime income; and so did "non-Islamist" (in your opinion) Albania, and especially it's future province Kossovo. The difference is that Kossovars and Albanians diversify in other savory areas - the sex slavery being their specialty of choice.
Correlation is not causation. What does this have to do with Islam? And the non-Islamist government in British India that traded in opium? And the non-Islamist government in Bolivia right now, which came to power on a promise to legalize coca farming? And non-Islamist America dominated the world tobacco market through the early 20th century.
The difference is that Kossovars and Albanians diversify in other savory areas - the sex slavery being their specialty of choice.
Where they compete with Orthodox Russia, Catholic Philippines, and Buddhist Thailand. What's your point?
I hear ya...
Passports....yeah, that's reliable! Accents, sure nobody can fake a southern drawl!
This is why profiling does not work with this group of terrorists. They will shave their beards, get sex changes, use the elderly....whatever it takes to attack us.
We need to keep checking everyone at random and use behvior profiling to its fullest.
Or we need to keep checking everyone. Period.
Once again, what does this have to do with the silly assertion of the article's writer?
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
