The sharks probably ate a lot of them.

German tanks also used gasoline. Our doctrine at that time was tanks were supposed to support infantry and tank destroyers we supposed to fight tanks.
My father was in the 6th Armored Division and told me a few stories. He claimed the TD's did very well against German tanks, but since they had open turrets they were easy prey for German infantry. In the early tank on tank battles, he noted it was very discouaging to see their shell bounce off of the German tanks and then have the German tank shoot through both sides of the American tank. An example of high losses was when the 6th AD attacked the southern flank of the German forces during the Battle of the Bulge. They had one company loose 18 out of 22 tanks in only one day. Check out the 6th AD's web site on Yahoo. History never really gave them credit for what they did in the initial breakthrough.

I'm not talking about the Sherman Firefly. I'm talking about "stick"Shermans.
The early Mark IV had a short barreled low velocity 75 mm cannon. It was intended to be used as an infantry support tank [like the British Matilda]. It was only after the Mark III was initially up-gunned with the wrong 50mm gun [contrary to Hitler's specific order] and complaints from Russia and Africa that the MARK IV was given the high velocity 75 that gave it the longevity to be the actual main German battle tank [based on numbers produced] throughout the war.
And the combination of comparative armor, fuel type and muzzle velocity still made it an almost impossible proposition for a Sherman - even with the 76.

"stick" = "stock". Another Senior moment.
