Looks like they found it. As usual, the Foxhole was all over it!

I'll say it again, Foxhole folks are the smartest bunch around. :-)

Back when I was on a boat, they had found the Wahoo's bell and it had been donated to the sub memorial at Pearl Harbor. My boat had just finished overhaul at MINSY, and we were given the honor of escorting the bell back to PH. It was in pretty bad shape, but by the time we tied up in Pearl it probably had had several hundred hours of sweat and polish poured over it, and it was in pristine condition.
Least we could do out of respect for such a legendary boat and her crew.
RIP Wahoo.
Still on patrol.....

Named after Jean Francois La Perouse who was the first European to discover it [and a lot of other neat things].
His full name was Jean Francois Gallaup Compte de La Perouse...wow that's a mouthful
To: Central Scrutiniser
La Perouse got around, there is a series of NW Hawaiian islands named after him, and a beach on Maui
Actually a bay on Maui. I've been there!

Song always makes me cry. It was sung beautifully in Hunt for Red October
Was that the one the Russians were singing when the torpedo was coming at them in Red Route 1 and Ramius was waiting to turn the boat until just the last minute? (Of course, it was sung in Russian though, not English).
To: G8 Diplomat
Actually, I was in error. It was Crimson Tide, and it was as they were submerging the ship for the first time.

Ah OK. I wondered about that because if it wasn't that song I thought it was, the only other songs in The Hunt for Red October are the Hymn to Red October (opening credits) and the anthem of the Soviet Union, and those certainly couldn't have been right!
To: G8 Diplomat
Speaking of submarine movie music - my favorite had to be the German crew singing "Tipperary" in Das Boot. What a classic scene.

Correction. They sung "It's a Long way to Tipperary" which is a different song. Ya' learn something new everyday...
