There is a difference between a magnetic pole shift, which is a historical fact, and probably will happen again. After a couple of days, the navigation systems should settle down and air traffic can return to normal--although GPS makes the use of a compass rather passe.
Now, the second kind of pole shift theoretically occurs when the mantle layer of the earth slips. Think of an orange who's skin has been losened from underneath and is able to move.
Now, yes, this is kind of out there. And, for the sake of fun, consider what this would mean: Probably an earthquake scenario the likes of which 99.99% of us would not survive. Consider a wall of earth about 200 yards high moving faster than the speed of sound. It gives the term "surfs up" a new meaning.
What is the proof of the theory? The mastadons found in extreme cold areas with tropical plants in their bellies. The whoe story of Atlantis can be attributed to this theory. There is a whole list of stuff that can be pointed out as supporting this theory.
Is it something we should worry about? Nah. You ain't gonna survive it and there ain't going to be any warning. So, its just not worth thinking about.
The book can be found on Amazon. Kind of dry reading, and somewhat technical in parts. But, if you are a geology buff its kind of fun. Fossil Fred did not dismiss it entirely in 1980--but that was the last I looked too closely at it.
