Hi. I was in Beirut for the past few weeks but left on Monday. Stayed at LeVendome and felt very safe there. The staff was quite friendly and caring. Where are you staying? Regards,

I had to do that a couple years back when the east coast was blacked out. Didnt do me any good, they forgot to tell us to make sure we washed out the soap scum first......

"I am NOT happy with the Israelis right now. I understand their concerns about their kidnapped soldiers but bombing the Beirut Airport was not going to help them in any way."

I sympatize with your plight and pray for your safety....

With that said.....you choose to go to that hell hole which is a VERY dangerous part of the world. I doubt very seriously if your situation trumps the Isreali's security concerns. Bad $hit happens in life sometimes....that's life....look at it this way.....how often does someone get to see the enemy get their a$$ kicked from behind the lines.....

Hunker down and stay safe!!!

I think the bombing of Beirut airport was because of intel. the Israelis got that Hezbollah was trying to move out the kidnapped soldiers to Iran. They hit all possible transit points for doing this, the intl. airport, the Syrian-Lebanese highway, a Lebanese airbase, etc. All inconvenience to you notwithstanding, I understand the logic of it. If their soldiers disappeared into Iran, they could have kissed them goodbye.

Re: you suggestion on VOA/BBC

in my coup experience we had a guy in the hotel who had his damned BBC feed stuck to his ear and pronouncing everything they said as truth.

it was both annoying and ironic, because (a) we were THERE, in the middle of it, and didn;t need no damned BBC reporter telling us what wqas happeneing, and (b) fog of war, nothing they said was accurate, up to date, helpful, or even close to what we were seeing with our own eyes.

we threatened to smash his shortwave if he didn't shut the hell up.

anyway, during fog of war, nobody knows anything, it's just a matter of hunkering down, taking care of yourself, and waiting for it to end.

biggest thing i learned was "Do Not Walk Upright In Hotel Corridor, Crawl."

The Israelis apparently took out the airport to keep Hizbollah from flying the two kidnapped soldiers out to Iran.

A ferry to Cyprus was my first choice but the Israeli navy has imposed a full naval blockade.

Good idea, that a get whatever food you can that will keep. And hunkering down is all else he can do.

I was going to suggest Turkey or Cyprus also, North or West. East does not sound like a good idea.

"Is there any possibility of going North and getting out through Turkey?"

Do not go anywhere. Do not move (unless it's a very short dash to a safer 5-star hotel). Otherwise stay exactly where you are.

The roads will be lawless at the moment, and you are an American.

Hang tight.
