"The bones were put in place to fuse the joint by inserting a plate and 23 screws to repair damage so severe that most horses would not be able to survive it."

The heart of a thoroughbred!! Hope he lives a long and happy life.

I don't know who put the bee in your bonnet that brought you out of lurk mode but I'd be more than happy to swat it for ya..

Tho you don't have much of a posting history here, what I viewed makes me suspect you have a hive of 'em closeby.

Not to worry, I have lots of swatters.

What right have you got to tell someone else what they should or should not do? You don't suggest, you command.

OH geeze, it was a friendly goading to get a better monitor because it's a shame to not be able to see pictures. I don't think Rte66 feels 'intimidated' by me.

Rte, did I threaten you with my tone about your monitor?

I'm just one opinion debating here. And I actually think I'm rather friendly. But I am opinionated. Bet you have some of them dang opinions yourself! At least about me.

Wow, cowdog77, your post #117 is very brave. The small number of self-appointed "experts" on these Barbaro threads insist that race horses are treated better than the family pet, and that everyone in the sport has nothing but the utmost concern for the horses. It's the way it is. Get over it. (I hope you realize I'm being deliberately sarcastic, but actually applaud what you wrote.)

HOTH, just following your model for pinging someone even when their name isn't mentioned.

Isn't that lady in the background in the top photo Gretchen Jackson, Barbaro's owner? Looks like the lady who was in the stands.

Love the smiles on the trainer and the doc!

This is also good, from one of the stories, quoting Dr. Richardson:

" ... Two good signs for Barbaro were the indication of a good blood supply to his injured leg, and his ability to get up and down on his own ... "

Good blood supply!

If anyone didn't watch the race live, an interesting thing is Barbaro left early and broke through the gate when they were still closed before the race started, and the gates are held together by strong magnets and take a lot of force to open. He went back walking fine, but he smashed his front knees into the gate and it was thought he might have been in pain and favoring other legs or off rhythm.

I didn't take it that way, but I'm more ashamed of being so poor - I used to not say that I couldn't see details on some of the photos.

At least now I say it and ask questions if I can't differentiate something. Everyone knows I'm poor.

Not being a horse person, but just loving horse racing as a spectator, all my life, inherited from a racehorse owner in the family, I do not presume to know *anything* at all about horses or racehorses (some tracks, however) - so I wouldn't even notice if someone was being authoritarian about them or not.

Gee, I honestly don;t know. Could be, though. Mr. Matz (or maybe it was the doc) said during the press conference that the owners live fairly close to the center.

Good blood supply! Yippeee! I hadn't heard that. Thanks for telling me. He sure looks good walking in that photo. You can see he's putting weight on the leg. Outstanding.

I've seen those replays over and over. When I posted about the "knees" comment I heard, it was that Barbaro had fallen to his knees at some point, but I do think he was mounted at the time and it was possibly pre-Derby.

It was just race people talking and someone said they had seen it happen - but I got the impression it wasn't yesterday.

If I run across the comment again, I'll post it here. It wasn't about his knees hitting the gate, I know that. All those same people said he didn't - but I do know it's still a possibility, too.
